Me and my son (who will be 3 at the time) will be flying out of Logan Airport in Boston to MCO. How do I find the cheapest flights?? Post your tips here!! We are probably going in September/October of 2015. I know I have awhile I jut wasn't to get some tips.

Flights for this time period won't even be released for the legacy airlines until October/November 2014. I suggest you do some searching on Google for this information. Look at prices this year to get a vague idea of what tickets will cost 1 1/2 years from now.

Sign up for JetBlue emails and they will alert you when they are going to extend the schedule. It usualy extends on a Sunday around noon eastern, I believe. They usualy have low fares when they release the schedule.

We just booked Jet Blue Newark to MCO for late September 2014. We got 4 tickets for $1000 plus I redeemed TrueBlue points and got my round trip ticket for free (well, technically $5 for taxes)!

Jet Blue will also give you a credit if the price of the airfare gets lower, which is great. Plus, you don't pay for your first bag, so I'm a huge fan of Jet Blue!

I think the earlier you can book, the better. Don't wait, thinking the price will get lower.

Enjoy!

You could shop around other airports. I know many people from Boston who fly out of Providence because it's cheaper. I have no idea about Orlando but you could save more by driving further away.

Best deals are usually released on Tuesday/Wednesday mornings and Saturdays as well. Sometimes JetBlue releases their new fares on Sunday. This is the best time to buy.

I just read an article a week or so ago saying there was a study done that the best prices are between 20-100 days before your planned flight date.

Definitely look at different airports and watch airfare now & ongoing to monitor price trends.

I wanted to fly at a great price through a small regional airline. It would've cost just a little more than gas, 2 hotel rooms, and extra cost of food from eating out- not to mention saving us almost 20 hours of traveling time. DH kept saying he wanted to drive so we could go to the beach, too. A month or two before we left, he changed his mind. The airfare was almost twice as much!!!! We drove.

1. Fly at an off peak time of day or day of week. Tues & Wed are cheapest days to fly.

2. Definitely start looking at prices now for the same dates this year. Make a mental note of how much prices fluctuate so when/if you see a good deal, you will immediately recognize it as such instead of wondering "Is this a good price?", posting here and by the time you get answers, that great price is gone.

I too am starting to plan a trip for late September, early October of 2015. We will be flying out of Omaha. I've priced enough flights to know that the hour drive from Lincoln will save me, on average, $150 per person than flying from Lincoln. Leaning toward Southwest, though I am open to changing, because they have the two bags free. When DH and I went last time we didn't have a lot of space for souvenirs and I want to not have to worry about that this time.

I've seen it said on many travel spots during the morning shows that you should buy tickets from 2-3 months before the flight.

This would be true except during holiday or very peak demand times of year. During those times its best to buy asap since high demand will only drive prices up as time goes on. That is unless you're willing to fly at an odd time such as a 6 am return home.

I would also suggest you check out the other airports in the area Providence, Hartford, Worcester, Manchester NH. I always find prices much cheaper than Logan and much less of a hassle. Good Luck!

Here are some good general guidelines to use when searching for your flights.

Based off all of the data here the best general guidelines to follow when searching for airfare.

  • The best booking window is from 29-104 days out from your travel date.
  • Flying in/out on Tuesdays - Thursdays generally tend to have cheaper rates than most other days of the week.
  • If you intend to travel during peak travel times (holidays, summer), then you may need to consider booking your flight further in advance than you normally would otherwise.
  • If you know that you are going to be traveling far enough in advance, then you should watch flight fares on a regular basis starting about 100 days out to get a good idea of what ‘good’ rates are. Once you find one that you are comfortable with, jump on it as it is likely to change soon.
  • Booking too far in advance (more than 100 days out) will generally lead to more expensive airfares.
  • Consider flying out of other nearby airports which can sometimes have much lower fares. If you live in the New York area you have three different airports (JFK, Newark, LaGuardia) plus Philadelphia and Atlantic City airports are not too long of a drive away either.
  • Booking your flight too early is still better than booking it too late and you will still save money.

Many of the flight aggregation sites like Kayak.com provide you with fare history when doing your searches. This information is highly valuable in helping you track down where you currently are with a particular fare - on the high side or low side? Kayak.com also gives you advice on when you should purchase your flights and the confidence it has on where the price will go.
