Tips for eating breakfast in room

If you have a toaster, Toaster Scrambles are good and a little more filling than a bowl of cereal. You can also do frozen waffles with a toaster. I make home-made muffins, freeze them and pack them in my suitcase. A lot of people tend to think muffins have to be sweet, but I have some recipes for more savory ones (such as bacon & cheese) which provide a nice change from the sweetness of donuts and Pop-tarts. I would also suggest pudding cups, and the yogurt is a great idea.

Mmmmmmm... any chance of you sharing your recipe for the bacon and cheese muffins? :goodvibes They sound delicious!

I am not the person who originally mentioned the bacon cheese muffins, but I thought they sounded good too so I searched online. Here is what I found:

(BTW, what cereal would you use for the "crunchy, nugget cereal?" I can't figure that one out. Rice Chex?)

Servings: 12 muffins
Category: Muffin

Ingredients:
1/2 pound bacon
vegetable oil
1 egg, beaten
3/4 cup milk
1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup crunchy, nugget cereal
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese c

Instructions:
Cook bacon- drain but reserve dripping, if necessary add vegetable oil to measure 1/3 c total. In a small bowl combine dripping/oil, egg and milk- set aside. Crumble bacon, set aside. In a large bowl, combine dry ingredients, make a well in center. Add wet mixture all at once; stir just until moistened. Batter will be lumpy, stir in cheese, bacon & cereal. Fill greased or lined muffin cups 3/4 full. Bake at 400 for 15-20 min.

I am the person who originally mentioned the bacon-cheese muffins, and that recipe is the same as mine, with the following exceptions: I add 1 tablespoon of baking powder (notice there is no leavening in the recipe above), a dash of salt, and about 1/8 t. of cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper is optional but just a little bit gives them a nice zing. I also use 2 cups of cheese, but that it just a personal thing - I believe you can never have too much cheese or too much chocolate! Also, I usually use a blend of Colby and Monterey Jack or cheddar and Monterey Jack - I think it gives it better flavor - but using all cheddar works, too. One bit of advice: If you use a really sharp cheese, increase the amount of sugar or they will be too bitter; if you use a really mild cheese you may want to decrease the sugar slightly. And the cereal in the recipe is Grape-Nuts. Amazingly, once they are baked you can't even tell there are Grape-Nuts in them. They are very dense and rich and they freeze and travel like a dream - taste like a dream, too. SDFgirl, thanks for saving me some typing! Let me know what you think of them.

We are leaving next week for our 5th annual trip to WDW. I usually have one suitcase dedicated to food/snacks. I bring cereal in ziplock bags as well as paper bowls and cutlery for breakfast. I buy the milk from the hotel store. I freeze a loaf of bread and stick it in the suitcase at the last minute before we leave home and by the time we arrive in our room it's thawed. I bring small packs of peanut butter and jam and that covers lunches. I put the sandwiches in ziplock bags also. I also bring tons of snacks too. I buy the all you can drink cups at the hotel and transfer the drinks into water bottles that I bring with me. I take those to the parks too. I find the food there soooo expensive. We always go out for a character dinner every night so it's worth the skimping during the day.

We are bringing:

fruit cups
instant oatmeal
pop tarts
gogerts-freezing at home and should be okay for a 4 hour flight
few little debbie snacks

Other than that, we do Churros. Only $2.00 or so in the park and my DH and DD love them. I figure that is one of the only ways to get DH to the parks early.

Which park can you get the churros in?? I didnt realize they sold them at WDW... We buy them at Six Flags by our house and they are yummy!!

forgot to add.... we will be driving when we go so I thought about making a big batch of homemade brownies before we go and fill up a container to take with us to eat as a snack in the room.. :mickeybar

I know that they are at MK, vendor use to be right infront of the castle. I think I also heard they are at Epcot.

these are all wonderful Ideas.. Just a couple of questions though.

1. We are not renting a car, so getting stuff off site is out of the question. Can you buy some of the things like cheese, and bread in WDW?

2. Does anyone know if all of the rooms in the AKL have coffee pots?

thanks for such great ideas. :p

Have you tried Clif Bars? They're pretty good as breakfast or snacks and when I have one it's a while before I get hungry. They're energy bars so they're great for running around WDW, but they're organic, so you don't have to worry about any weird chemicals supplying the energy. My favorite is the Chocolate Almond Fudge.

They also make snack bars for kids called "Z Bars." They're great, but they do have more sugar than the regular Clif Bars.

More info here: http://www.clifbar.com/eat/eat.cfm?location=bar

Also regular or chewy granola bars are good.

The food courts or self service food places at the resorts have microwave ovens that you can use. They really prefer that you do not cook in your room as the room is not meant for cooking. So leave your hot plates at home please. For the safety of all the guests.

I usually go for the less sugary stuff (no muffins/donuts) in the room. If I am going to eat empty calories it is going to be much better WDW treats! Love cottage cheese (which can be found in small yogurt sized serving containers, string cheese. Fresh fruit is always easy too. I am not a great morning person and am usually not hungry right out of bed so I usually carry my breakfast with me into the park and consume it within the first hour. A banana and granola bar slip easily into my bag and I buy a serving of milk as a protein "shooter." this tides me over till lunch without making me groggy and feel like I have a ton of bricks in my stomach. I don't eat a big bacon and egg breakfast while at home why I do this every morning of my vacation? If I do eat a big breakfast while on vacation it is a late breakfast that will then be considered breakfast and lunch.

Glad to see so many suggestions. We are a family of 5 and it is essential for us to eat in the room so we can be up and out in time for park opening. (One person can be getting ready in the bathroom while others are eating, etc.)

This isn't a breakfast idea, but we plan to buy a bag of salad and a small container of dressing. After a few days of eating "park food", sometimes a little green is nice.

Does anyone know if you can bring a knife in checked luggage or, even if the "rules" permit it, it will make you the subject of scrutiny? Maybe we should just buy a cheapie at the grocery store.

I packed a knife on our last trip so we could cut some cheese for cheese and crackers. I wrapped it in paper (around the blade) and put it in my checked luggage with my other food items.

No one ever asked.

Churros are in Cantina de San Angel for $1.99 ea quite nice with a coffee. In MGM at the food cart just outside the Chinese Theatre exit.
Incidentally, churros are served, traditionally, with hot 'cocoa' that is so thick a spoon can stand up in it! wish the Cantina carried that little calorie bomb!

Like to do breakfast in room as it gets us off to a quick start & saves bucks.
Yes, we do the soup, hot cocoa, hot cereal w/ hot water from the coffee pot

Bon Appetit!

I'm learning a lot of neat tips and find this eye opening... :earseek:
I've never done more than danish and juice in the room....
Usually, we eat breakfast in a restaurant but have had those times where eating in the room saves time and when short on time...it's a lifesaver.

I always pack oatmeal packets, breakfast bars, and Tasters Choice gourmet roast instant coffee. I can brew water through the coffee maker, and one little pot will make enough water for 2 servings of oatmeal and and 2 cups of coffee. I don't like the weak coffee the hotel offers. After we get going I'll grab a second cup of coffee when we get to a park! Easy to pack.

If you like lunch ideas, have you tried those tuna pouches? They are great to pack because they are thin, and the albacore one is great. Add some rye crisp, and tomato soup (again the packet kind made with coffee pot hot water) and it's a fairly healthy meal. Also very easy to pack!

We drive, and I always bring breakfast food (we don't like to take time out in the prime hours of the morning to eat!), snacks, and drinks in a rubbermaid storage container. For breakfast choices I pack muffins, bagels, cereal bars, granola packets, bananas, oranges, and individual juice containers. I also bring lots of bottled water, soda, and snack items like crackers and pretzels for afternoon breaks or evening snacking.

wow this is a great thread!!! :cool1:

Thanks for all the great ideas.

We are going in July can't wait!!! Will be eating breakfast in our room now that I have all these great tips :) :Pinkbounc :cheer2:

thanks for all the wonderful tips!
Especially the one about freezing a loaf of bread and packing it.. I was wondering about where to get a whole loaf of bread in Disney if we're not going to have a car. I know the kids will want their pb&j sandwiches and I like to use 100% whole wheat.. it will be so much easier to bring our own! thanks! :goodvibes

Crystal light drink mix - individual packets for mixing with free ice water in the parks, and also the little tubs, to mix up for afternoon breaks in the room (bring 1/2 gal pitcher & wooden spoon). Much better than pop.

I brought "wraps" for sandwiches rather than bread. easy to pack. Sams warehouse has the best price 12 for 2.99 (makes 24 sandwiches). Also packed bag of baby spinach, tuna pouches, frozen cooked chicken. for lunch in the room.

fruit selection at the TTC grocery stop was not very good. brought apples from home.

bring ziploc bags, peanuts, dried fruit, trail mix and bring into park each day.

Also, gift shop at POR had bread, PB & jelly for sale.
