How does tipping on a disney cruise work? Do we pay in advance, at the end or during the cruise? If we order room service do we hand cash when our food is delivered?

They will automatically add suggested gratuity to your account and print out slips you can give your servers and stateroom attendant on the last night. There are several online calculators that will tell you what the suggested amount will be. You can go to guest services to adjust as desired. You could also include additional cash in the envelopes they provide if you wanted. Apparent from those positions you do want to tip room service deliveries and having cash is the easiest way. If you order drinks at the bars they include a base gratuity automatically and you can chose to add to it. Those bills usually are just added to your onboard account. The other tipping to consider is porters helping with your luggage when you arrive and optionally when you get off. We had a bunch plus kids so we had someone help us with our luggage through customs and out to our car. Glad I kept some cash to tip them.

As noted, DCL will automatically add the gratuities to your onboard account. The gratuities are charged per night, at $13.50 per person. This breaks out to $4.50 per person, per night, to your room host; $4.50 per person, per night, to your dining room server; $3.50 per person, per night, to your assistant server; and $1.00 per person, per night, to your head server.

At the end of the cruise you'll receive a sheet with coupons on it, indicating the position, name of person, and amount of gratuity. You tear off each coupon and place it in the proper envelope to distribute to the people.




You can add additional cash to the envelopes, if you wish.


Room service, you can tip via cash, or add a tip to the bill (be aware you may have to as for the bill, to do this).

There is an option to prepay the tips by calling DCL. Essentially, they roll the suggested gratuities cost in the price of your cruise, and the total must be paid by your Paid-in-full date. The onboard process stays the same as what @PrincessShmoo described. Coupons and envelopes at the end of the cruise. People use that possibility to end up with a smaller onboard account.
