Tipping.....

Harvardx even mentioned they registered because they felt this thread was informative and they learned something from it. And I'd bet there are many who are reading but not posting that feel the same way.

I'm one of those that have been reading this posting and haven't responded until now. I've never tipped housekeeping because I really didn't think about it. But after reading all these posts, I have printed out some envelopes to take with me on our trip in Oct. so I can tip housekeeping. I can't believe I never thought of tipping housekeeping, but you're right, their salary is quite low and they deserve to be tipped due to the amount of work they do. They probably work harder than 80% of the population. I do tip my hairdresser because I know that most of the money goes back to the business. I even tip the pizza delivery guy.

I understand this can be a touchy subject with some from a few of the posts, but like it's been said here before, the decision to tip or not is a personal one.

I pay $12 for a haircut that takes 15 minutes. So, it takes them 1 hour to give me 4 haircuts. 4 cuts per hour X $12 per cut = $48 per hour. Now, this is just for me. Other peoples' hair takes longer to do. But for me, I get charged $48 an hour to get my hair cut. Maybe this will clear up your confusion.

Jpaulgor feels that because the salon company makes the $48/hr (per hairdresser's labor), that in turn, the individual minimum wage (or slightly more) hairdressers don't deserve a tip from them. But I still don't get this way of thinking, because the hairdressers don't "own" the salon or reap any of the big profits that the company does ? Hair Cuttery, Great Clips etc makes that money---not that person who is actually standing on their feet all day cutting hair. I think this is it ? Still trying to figure it out.
But of course, jpaulgor is totally entitled to feel the way they do....it's just a tad difficult to comprehend his/her reasoning on this ?

Now I'm confused casue that makes no sense. If you were being charged by the hour you would pay $48 but you are paid by the haircut so you r paying $12. There is no way that this comes out to be $48. Now if you feel like you should put in $36 to make it $48 I'm sure they would be happy. But there is no way that "you" are paying that price. It is $12 anyway you cut it.

However, the hair dresser only gets a small portion of that $12. She doesn't make $12 every 15 minutes; the salon does. Also, they can't always do a hair cut every 15 minutes. My hair takes about 35 minutes.

Just like at a restaurant. The waitress doesn't get the $20 it costs for the steak. She gets a tiny portion of that $20 and then also relies on her tips.

but not common sense... not unless someone is jumping in the chair the second you get out.

What you are refusing to see is that although you are paying the hairdresser $12, the money goes to the SHOP, unless that hairdresser OWNS the shop, they are NOT getting the money.
You can slice an apple anyway you want, but in the end it is still an apple.

Even a fifth grader knows the stylist doesn't keep the entire $12.
