That is exactly what I was referring to in post #11 on the first page. It is the same thing and if you hadn't noticed you might have overtipped. Trust me, I doubt they would have brought it to your attention.
ETA - If you feel the service was not up to snuff, you could have spoken to a manager and reduced the tip.
Sorry! I misread your first post. There were only three in our party, the service was fine (actually, a bit overbearing), not deserving of a managerial telling-off, but not deserving of more than 20% either.
I know you are going to Florida, but, I just want to tell you and anyone else reading that not all of American pays their servers less than minimum wage. WA. state servers are paid minimum, ($7.93) now that does not mean you should not tip.
So the wage rates in America are so low that people rely on tips to stay afloat? How can some people only get paid $2 - $4 an hour? I am 19 years old and currently get paid about $20 US an hour ($25 aus)..... and I only work in a newsagent.
We will also be using the meal vouchers at WDW, so what happens there?
No, that's a bit backwards. The wage rates for those positions are deliberately lower based on the expectation that those folks will make the vast majority of their money from tips.

I know I have seen a note in menus about large parties, but I guess they are doing this to everyone now. My problem is that while it protects the server, it removes any discretion I may have about what is an appropriate tip. It also makes me look like the jerk if I make a request to lower the tip if the service wasn't deserving of 18 or 20%.
What's interesting is that there are always several discussions going on about how people want to do away with the whole tipping thing, and just build the 18% in to the menu prices, at all restaurants, everywhere.

Actually, I loved having the tip included in the dining plan. It was already worked into the budget of the trip! I would actually rather have the servers (and all low-wage workers) paid a living wage and get rid of the complicted tipping system altogether. Then all those ancient skycaps could finally retire I guess you are right - you can't please everyone.
Just another note about tipping at buffets (just in general, doesn't sound like it applies to the OP). I worked at a weekend buffet, and although we did not bring the food, we either had to stock and clean the buffet, or if we were too busy, we had to share our tips with the bus people who did stock and clean it. Please re-consider your tipping policy at buffets. The wait staff may be doing more work than you realize.
