tipping the taxi driver?

what's the standard rate for tipping the driver -- is it 15% of the fare?

I usually do a few dollars--whatever it took to get to the next "larger" amount. So, for $45 fare, I do about $5. I usually only have one small bag, so there's no lifting that they are doing.

I usually do 10% plus round up to the next dollar. Unless the fare is under $15 or so, then I'll give more. If it's to/from an airport and there are bags I might also give a little more.

From SNA to DLR, I usually tip $5.

Good question. Why are you tipping your hairdresser? Why are you tipping your hotel maid? Why are you tipping the waitress? They're all just doing their jobs, right?

I don't know why we tip people, but the fact is that in certain professions it's expected and not honoring that means that the person who is providing the service is not getting adequate pay. I'm the first to say that it's a ridiculous system and one that has become a necessity rather than a perk due to the fact that those people can't live on the income without being subsidized by the public through tipping. Maybe if businesses and corporations paid their employees a decent wage, we wouldn't have these discussions about tipping.

I'm a 20% tipper across the board. If the driver gets me there without making me scream because he's going 90 and zipping back and forth, he gets the same 20% I would give a server in a restaurant. I figure a few bucks either way isn't going to break me and I know what tips mean to my son, who is a server and bartender.

If the driver makes me wet myself, though, all bets are off

I am usually 15%-20% for cabs, unless I have to explain how to get to the Disneyland Hotel <er>. Minimum tip $5.
