Tipping Question - Medieval Times Restaurant

Honestly it should be $5.00 a person in your party. We do a lot to make sure you and your family have a great time! Leaving 4 dollars for a party of 2 is not really telling us we did a good job. For being a GREAT server and us going out of the way for special things, $10.00 per person in your party is usually what we call good and know we did a great job for your evening. Hope this helps. I have been a server there for a while.

What I hate tipping so much for is at the buffetts at WDW. When I go to buffetts at home, I always tip $1 per person. If the server did anything extra, then I would tip $1-$2 more. At the buffetts at WDW, I can see tipping more than $1 because they get your drinks for you. But I don't think they should get a full 15%. I always feel guilted into giving them 15% because they list what the tip "should" be.

oh now you did it :thumbsup2

Woo hoo im not the only one:worship:

That's one of the places that I didn't realize you should tip until they mentioned it at the end of the show. We have been about 3 times (not lately). I think I left about $20 for 5 people (sorry Jeff) but many of the people around me were leaving nothing. It seems more like a show than a dinner so I think a lot of people don't really consider the tip as something extra they should leave.

There is no bringing something special at Medieval Times. You get what they serve, when they serve it.

We tip about $2pp.

I humbly disagree with this. I have food allergies and could not eat a couple things they served. The waitress was amazing and brought me a TON of extra ribs to make up for what I could not eat. So, yes, they DO sometimes do special things - but you have to communicate (nicely!). She got a nice tip from us - probably around $20.

I worked at the Dallas location while in College. It was by far my hardest serving job, I was seriously fit when I worked there!

Normally a good tip would be $20 for a couple, but I would say $5 a person is pretty good. Lots of people do not tip, so it is great when someone else over tips, so it averages out. I liked the job ok, but it was hard work and far from where I lived.

You did notice this thread is from 2010, right?

I'm guessing the OP has resolved the tipping dilemma by now!

Nope, I didn't notice. Too much multitasking here :laundy:

Sometimes I'll even read through a thread and then read my own post cause I forgot I posted on it already.

We were at Medieval Times a couple of months ago. There were 7 of us, and I think we left around a $40-$50 tip. Now that I think about it, it probably was too much. However, I can't believe someone left only $2!!! lol.
.

Even in 2010 2.00 is a really bad tip! We typically leave 15.00 - 20.00 for two of us.

I know this is an old thread but found this forum helpful as I was reading it while at the NJ location yesterday. We had 2 adults and 3 kids. Our server, Jerry, was great and we tipped $5pp($25). I didn't feel this was too much at all for all the hard work he did and he was great with the kids also.I remembered to tip kinda last minute recalling our visit years earlier. Medieval Times should do a better job of informing guests that they should tip so they can be better prepared .

I have only been to Medieval Times with school groups (we also go to the NJ location!), so I never know how that situation is handled. I don't know if they charge us a tip, or the organizer takes care of it while the rest of us are busy trying to herd 150 8th graders through the hall onto the buses.

I was scrolling through the DIS for the first time in a few years and stumbled upon this thread not realizing it was mine at first. LOL! We've never been back since our first visit, there was one local, but I'm happy to have a better idea of what to tip and hear the stories from people working there. Our server did nothing over what she had to and barely did that but I hope to some day try again and hopefully have someone a bit more concerned about getting us our food warm and refilling drinks.

To those of you who are separating out 'the meal' from 'the show' to justify a lower tip - how is Medieval Times different than Hoop de Doo or character dining or even a Disney buffet? I've seen thread after thread chastising people who don't want to tip a full 20% because Disney meals are overpriced, yet somehow it's justified at Medieval Times?

I don't think there is anything wrong with separating the two, why should someone tip the waitstaff for the show? Its not like they are serving your food on horses.

We tip $25 for the 5 of us when we go to dinner shows.

This is kind of my thought on it now. Although, I have to admit that I didn't realize this when I first went to Medieval Times.
I think people should also consider that it isn't like any other waiting job because the waiters usually only do 2 seatings a night.

So if you went to Hoop De Doo, would you tip based on $20 for your meal even though it cost between $65-72 per person? It's not like they're serving your food on horses there either.

When our family goes go out to eat we average about $100, we tip 20%. So, if I'm going to a show, I'm figuring the food is worth about $100 so we tip according to that, plus a little more.
I've never been to HDD but maybe even more because the food at WDW costs more than at your average restaurant.
I would not tip a standard 20% on a $365 bill because the food portion was not that much money.
Every person has to decide how to base a tip, because you know its not mandatory.

I'm glad this thread was bumped, as we are probably going to visit the MT 2 hours away soon, and it's good to know ahead of time what is expected/appropriate. You just don't think of the servers at places like this being paid so little, but sadly it's true. I know in the back of my mind that servers at a regular restaurant are, but it just seems like servers at places like this should have standard wages, since they often do so much more than a normal restaurant. To me, what they do IS part of the show, the whole package. So if I have a bad server, the great show will not completely make up for it. At the same time, a great server will do so MUCH to enhance the show.

I can't believe they get paid server wages. Don't the servers participate in the show (I swear I've seen our servers during the opening carrying flags, etc)
