tipping question - apprentice haircut in Seattle

I'm having my haircut today at a "salon" (hard to call it a salon b/c it's in downtown Seattle and if I wanted to dye my hair shocking pink today, I could). Their normal haircuts are 30+ to 80+.

But I am scheduled with an apprentice, for which I will only be charged $15.

I'm not good at tipping. Mainly b/c I hate it. I normally leave it up to DH. But DH doesn't enjoy tipping for haircuts, and I think he tips too little.

What is all of your learned advice?

My hair isn't to my shoulders, and will be taken up a bit, into something I hope to be a bit more edgy than my usual boring (but works for my hair) bob.

Doubt I'll go pink, though. :upsidedow

Thank you for your tipping advice! I have 3.5 hours before the appointment.

I usually tip 20 - 25% for hair cuts/color. So, based on the fact it's $15, I'd probably tip $3 - $5.

I tip the same as the PP....If I really was happy with the end result (which I hope you are), I would tip 5$, if not I would tip 3$, and let them know I was not completely satisfied..

Hope it all works out :goodvibes

If it were me, I'd probably start at $5, and if I really liked the cut, I might give more. If the person is good, and you want to go back, she'll remember you! Also, she might cut you a deal when she's no longer an apprentice :)

Hey, turns out DH was right!

But I think he'd want to tip 5 bucks even if I were paying 80. And even I know that's not right. :rotfl:

Thank you, by the way.

I tend to tip more at beauty schools or when an apprentice does my hair because they are often times students who are either being paid very little or working for free as part of their program.

If I loved the cut and it was only $15 I may very well tip 100% -which would still be 50% of what I normally pay for a cut.

But that is just me.

I'm curious as to why you find it hard to call it a "salon"....

I'm a well seasoned hair stylist who works in an upscale salon. I can give you the most beautiful, believable blonde bob you've ever seen and then on the next client give her a shocking pink spiked hairdo.

Not sure I understand the difference?
