Tipping... or OVER Tipping?

Let's say you go out to dinner with two friends. You each get a meal and a drink, and you each are paying for your own meals, so you have three bills.

One bill comes to $12, one bill comes to $18, and one bill comes to $16.

You only had one waitress. You only had one table. Had all of the meals been on one bill, the total would have come to $46.

Am I totally crazy, or are my friends totally crazy...

I had the $16 bill, and I left a $3-and-some-change tip (to make the amount even), which is a little more than 15% and a little less than 20%.

My FRIENDS on the other hand, EACH left $4 tips, and thought I was wrong for leaving MY 15%... they claimed that we EACH should have left 15% of the TOTAL bill. :confused3

Our waitress got a $11-and-some-change for a $46 bill. :headache:

Who is crazy? And, did I do the right/wrong thing?

Each??? No way! I think you each should have paid a tip based on your portion of the bill.

I agree with Mushy. You tip on your bill. You're right. :)

$46 x 15% = $6.90. They think that EACH of you should have left $6.90? That's nuts.

More likely they think that you should have paid 1/3 of 15% of the total bill, which still doesn't make sense. What if someone at the table had ordered $40 in food/drinks? That would really up your part of the tip and let the one who had the higher priced food off easy.

You tip on your bill total - especially when you have separate checks.

The only way they should have said anything is if you had tipped less than 15%. That embarrasses the whole table, and my in-laws (who I really do love) do it every stinkin' time :headache:.

I am not understanding <been a long day sorry>... Are you saying they gave too much because I don't think a 4 dollar tip on a 12 dollar meal is too much and maybe not enough on the 18 dollar meal. I am a BIG tipper by nature though. I just made a flub the other day. my meal was 30 dollars I meant to give 60 dollars <was really a nice gentleman, and helped with a spill at the table> and I put the money down and said to keep the change and right after I said that I realized I gave another twenty.... I had given a 50 dollar tip for a 30 dollar meal!!!!!! I felt stupid and didn't ask for it back. In fancier resteraunts I give about a 50% percentage tip and in the smaller ones I usually give from 50-100%. I started doing that a few years ago and I don't feel bad about it. It makes me smile when they realize what they got. I don't go out much so when we do I like to tip.

On a $46 bill I would have a left $9 tip based on good service. I don't think the tip left was excessive.

Funny, they think that you each should have left 15% of the $46 total but niether of them did...

Oh I'm sorry I missed this! So they think you should have tipped 45%? Tht would have been over a $20 tip. :confused3
