Last night (Wednesday) the kids and I had dinner at Jiko. When we checked in we were asked if we were on a Disney dining plan. I told the person at the Podium I was using the DDE card, and not the DDP (Disney Dining Plan.) This information is relayed to the server who explains what is included on each plan.

We started with one apple flatbread to share (which was fabulously different and the kids liked it.) I ordered the scallops, DS (age 13) had the beef shortrib from the adult menu, and DD (age 11) ate the fruit cup and filet mignon from the kids menu. Desserts were the Celebration for DS, and DD ate the kids sundae. I also had a drink from the bar.

My first receipt would be for a cash paying guest, which is pretty much the same as what a DDP guest will see, except no credits are removed from the account.
My pre-tax total was $112.44.
Tax was $7.31.
Amount due of $119.75.

Then it says SUGGESTED TIP.
Under that is a percentage of 18% and 20%.
18% - $20.24
20% - $22.49.

Then there is a line where the guest is to write in the tip. It says "OPTIONAL TIP ________________. Under this it has "Not Included with Dine Plan."
It is pretty clear that there is no tip included for dining plan guests.

The guest is supposed to write in the tip and then add it up and put the total on the TOTAL line. They can either charge what is not covered back to their room or pay for it either with a credit card or cash.

If you are on the dining plan it will remove credits. Total for what you would pay out of pocket though will be printed on the receipt. On the DDP there will be an 18% autogratuity added to the bill for alcoholic beverages--this is not a change from past procedures.

Since I'm a passholder with a DDE card I had her run my discount.
Discount was $21.04 for food and $1.45 for bar (had to have that Kilamarita.)
Subtotal: $89.95
18% Gratuity: $20.24
Tax: $5.85
Amount Due: $116.04

I charged it back to my room so there also was yet another piece of paper for me to sign for the room charge.
On that receipt I had the $116.04 for the dinner with tip, and a line to add in more of a tip. I didn't add any more to charge back to the room, but I threw a few bucks into it so she got 20%.

I tried to take a photo of the receipts but they're not photographing well (too much glare). When I get home I'll scan it.

Bottom line for dining plan guests: you are not getting an autogratuity of 18% added to your bill if you're on the dining plan. But you are getting a spot to add in a tip and then either pay it or charge it back to your room. Suggested tip of 18% and the dollar amount is printed on the receipt so you don't have to do any math. You do not have to pay the 18% as it is not billed. You get to write in your amount, whatever it may be.

If you have a party of 6 or more you will be charged an autogratuity of 18%. This is a service charge and printed on the menus, thus no surprise--the autograt has always been on there, they just dropped the party size to six people. All DDE cardholders also receive an autogratuity of 18% regardless of party size. As a DDE cardholder if you receive poor service and want this adjusted you need to speak with a manager. (Autogratuities are common even outside of Disney.)

Tonight I sat in a really nice restaurant for two hours, eating fabulous food which was beautifully presented, with great service by at least four different people. We had a question about one of the sauces for the shortribs so they brought out a small amount for DS to taste. I have no problem paying a tip for good service and am generally a good tipper, and my server earned her twenty three bucks from me. Only difference for me is that I did not leave cash--normally I leave a cash tip and charge the rest back to the room.
Couldn't figure out how to do this with the autogratuity, but I'm going to ask tomorrow when we go to Spoodles.

Disney continuously evolves processes, and what we see on January 2 may not be what they're doing in a couple of weeks or months. I didn't see the old tip card in the folio with my tickets, but we'll see what happens tomorrow when I go to Spoodles on the Boardwalk. Jiko is "Signature Dining" and two credits on the DDP while Spoodles is less upscale and only one credit.

Regarding HOW to pay the tip:

You can pay it with your room charge.
You can use cash (cash, at Disney World?)
You can charge it with a regular credit or debit card
You can use Disney Visa Reward Points
You can use a Disney Gift Card

Whatever sort of money you use to buy things at Disney can be used for the tip.

Normally I pay cash for the tip even though I send my restaurant bill back to the room. Tonight I'm going to see how I do this with the DDE card and an autogratuity.

HTH.

Thank you for such a clear explanation of how this works.

Seems fairly simple.....until I have to deal with it.
LOL!!!!!
Thanks for the info.

I wanted to double check to make sure I understood one of your discounts. Do you get an AP discount for Jiko? I just have the coupon for my AP right now so I can't get the actual list of AP discounts for restaurants from the Passholder website.

Thanks!

No AP discount at Jiko. With the AP I purchase the Disney Dining Experience card, and then I use that for my table service meals.
Not all restaurants accept DDE--fortunately Jiko does. :-)

The entire system is pretty simple. Its just a change as to how things have been done at Disney for eons regarding the dining plan.

Cruises work this way too: you pay your inclusive fare that includes meals, but you still are responsible for tips on the ship.

i think i will buy disney gift cards to leave for my tip.....
i get monies toard the script plan for school tution

I nd two credits on the DDP while Spoodles is less upscale and only one credit.

I'm terrible at math..but it looks like the gratuity is based on the prediscounted amount. Otherwise how could 18% ($20.24) be the same for both?

If we charge our tips back to the room, can we pay off our balance with Disney dollars?

Yes, the gratuity is determined on the pre-discounted amount. Technically that is the way that it should have been determined prior to the auto 18% gratuity for all DDE cardholders.

Lindyn, Can you tell us about snack credits and any changes with them while you are their? Thanks

I have DDE. If I am asked at the beginning of the meal if I have a Disney dining plan, I intend to say "no" and then present the card at the end of the meal as usual.

I don't consider DDE a "Disney dining plan." Now if they ask if I have a discount program, I'll say "yes."

The OP is a DDE member and probably won't be able to shed any light on DDP snack credits unless she decides to ask out of curiosity, or keep an eye out for the DDP snack stickers on items at the resort eateries. Since she is not on the DDP she won't be using any snack credits.

Thanks for the explanation of the DDE. Sounds like it will be simple.

Will be interesting to see if you can part cash part other. Maybe tell the server you want to charge XX amount?

Keep us updated!!

Plenty of snack items available with the dining plan. You'll need to look for the little sign next to each thing to see if it is a snack on the plan. I haven't noticed changes with snack items.

The only big changes have to do with the tip, and how its paid for DDP participants, and the autogratuity for DDE members. There is also no appetizer, and the servers with whom I have spoken are told that they cannot substitute items. (Like you cannot substitute an appetizer for a dessert.)

Tonight we went to Spoodles, and I wanted to pay cash for the tip. Discussed it with the server and she would have had to call a manager over to remove the gratuity in order for me to pay her cash. She needed to turn over my table (the place was packed) so I just went on my way.

This is not a win-win situation, as I don't like to send tips back to my room account. I left her some cash, though it was not the entire amount of the tip. I guess I could leave her cash if I paid my bill in cash. However I don't carry a lot of cash while at Disney and am not planning on doing so in the future.

You can pay your tips in any method allowed by Disney, to include the Scrips gift cards, Visa, Disney Rewards Points, room charge, or credit card. Or you don't have to leave a tip... but if you're a DDE cardholder and don't want to leave a tip you need to discuss it with a manager to have the tip removed.

Thanks for all the great info! Glad to see all the ways to pay the tip. Assuming 2009 is the same, I'll either buy a Disney gift card loaded with enough to cover tips for the week, or charge back to the room and pay that with cash.

Thank you for taking the time!!
