Tipping in restaurants

And that is exactly what they are paid to do! I do not tip take out cashiers for doing the job they are paid to do!

In the US they are paid less than minimum wage to do that, as in $3/hr-ish. It's beyond rude not to tip at least 7% (10% standard) for takeaway at a place like Chili's or Outback.

And my opinion in my last post, is based on the culture we have in England. And im sorry but if you think its better for people to lose their jobs, because people cant afford to eat there, then you are wrong and that logic is wrong!!
Thank you for the information. When I'm in Great Britain, I'll absolutely tip according to the culture/custom there. The custom HERE is to tip at least 15% on the cost of your check pretax.

We always tip 20%. I feel like most of you if you can't afford to tip you probably shouldn't eat out at a sit down meal.

I don't tip take-out cashiers either, unless it is "curb-side" service. Then I will gladly tip to avoid having to get my kids out of their carseats and inside! At a table service, I tip around 20%, although most of the time we have the automatic 18% for a party of 6+.

Strawberry, how many pages back did you have to read to bump a thread that was a year and a half old? :rotfl:

And again after 2 months. The more you run over a dead cat, the flatter it gets. Let it go...

I wish people would stop saying this like it is true for the entire US. There are states in which servers are paid minimum wage. Servers aren't getting shafted like that everywhere. Any time I go to a restaurant my server is guaranteed $8.00 before tips.

I'm shocked by how little some servers in the U.S make!!! I'm in Canada and make $9.65/hr as a server and will be going up to $10/hr in October. I really don't see a difference in my tips because of the ecomony and truly enjoy my job.

I usually tip pretty decently, unless it's horrible service. I think I didn't leave any tip at all, once, and it was because the waitress was just downright rude and nasty, and I'm not tipping for that kind of behavior.

I also tip at places like Applebee's, curb-side service. I figure they are bringing food to my car in the rain, sleet, or snow. Or if I order carry-out at a place where I go inside and pick-up the food. Although if I stop by a place like Jet's pizza, where I go in, and order at the counter and then pick-up the pizza, I don't tip there.

Okay, you're right.

In 80% of the United States, restaurant servers are legally paid less than half the minimum wage. The government expects them to average at least minimum wage through a combination of wages and tips. Frankly, since $16,000 doesn't sound like a livable annual salary, I don't care what the other ten states are. I'll still tip.

This isn't exactly true. The government GUARENTEES that they make minimum wage by requiring restaurants to make up the difference if tips do not bring them up to at least minimum wage.

Im really glad i popped back on here and read your quote, because everyone who is american based has said to tip even if you get terrible service, even if the waiter/waitress is rude, nasty and ignorant.. tip.
Doesnt matter what they do, they could be spitting in your food infront of you, but you have to tip. I dont tip in England if this happens and if i were unlucky enough for this to happen in the US i wouldnt be tipping either!!

So thanks!!

Nope this non American European tips always 20% no matter what. I'm om vacation, enjoying a thousands Dollars costing trip and than would be skimping on a few Dollar?
No way Hosé :lmao:
BTW maybe we just realize that the Dollars we give as a tip could make the difference for the waiter if he could buy clothes, medicines or food for his children.

You have to admit that you are exaggerating a bit here. No one has said you have to tip even if you get terrible service. They have said it is customary to tip, and to plan not to do so just to save yourself some money (and not because of a lack of service) is wrong.

If the tip makes the difference between being able to afford a restaurant or not, then you can afford the restaurant and should go elsewhere.

Then one would think the waitstaff would keep that in mind when performing their job.

My cost of vacation is moot. tipping is a reward for providing a service. I base the tip on the quality of my service not the cost of my vacation.

If you deliver lousy service than you get nothing from me except a complaint to the manager of a restaurant.
mediocre service, where you simply bring the food, without checking to see if any thing else is needed, refill drink orders or the order is screwed up will get 10% max.
Standard service. You introduce yourself, smile, ask how I am doing etc etc will get you 15-18%
Oustanding service will get you 20% or more.

Sorry that you are in a low wage earning occupation. Your choice not mine, nor do I feel the need to make up for your employers short comings.

Tipping is not a fudemental right. It must be earned.

You obviously never have dined in Europe.
The American wait staff is a God sent gift for us.:thumbsup2
And again I'm spending a fortune on a vacation and I would be very ashamed to humiliate every one that is serving me.
O and BTW we also tip 20% at a buffet. On the other hand is is always very nice to come back in a restaurant and they remember you as a nice client and not as the "Grumpy"one :lmao:
It is so nice when the waiters just comes to you're table whit your favorite drink or wine you ordered last night.

I frankly don't care if they remember me as a nice client or a grumpy one. If a waiter or waitress is downright rude to me, I'm not tipping. And it doesn't matter if I'm on a vacation or dining in a local restaurant. If you're going to be rude to me, then you don't get a tip. I think I've had one time in my life where this was the situation. 99% of the waiters and waitresses I've had are very efficient and most definitely polite.

well I agree with some.. since I use to waitress I have high standards on what I expect, If I have to ever ask you for something you should either just be doing (like refills) or I have to remind you I specificly asked for something earlier and still don't have it.. 10% is the max...
if you get it all right and I don't ever have to bring up the obivious then the higher you go...

now for buffetts.. I have a big issue for even having to tip 10% personal choice I know a lot of people don't agree with but... if all you are doing it making sure I have a drink and clearing a plate your really not doing much if anything for me as a wait person so what am I giving you a tip for..
I am getting my food and whatever I need so i should tip myslef..(jk).

but I really don't believe in tipping high in buffett situations - and really have an issue when you have a party of 6 or bigger and they put the tip included on it. that really gets my boat going... but I know not much I can do there even though it is crappy in my eyes..

You guys realize this is a many year old thread that Strawberry Tink bumped up in June & has bumped up again, right? Time to unbeat this dead horse.
