Do you tip daily, at the beginning of your stay or at the end of your stay? How much?

TIA

I normally tip daily. For an average room, I tip $2-$3/day for a suite a dollar or two more.

Daily and $2-$5 a day depending on how messy my kids have been. ;)

I tip daily 1% of my stay. So if it cost me 400$ to stay 4 nights I leave 4$ a day and whatever change I have. Likewise if I stay 1 night at 80$ I only leave a dollar. I might be tipping to low, but nowdays everyone gets a tip so there is less to go around! :scared1:
I do tip waiters/waitresses very well,:goodvibes I used to be one years and years ago :) oh ya my hairdresser too :) lol

Same here. (I have to tell my wife 'not' to make the beds up too much). :sad2:

I tip daily mainly because I don't know if it will be the same housekeeper our whole trip , there are somedays where we willl have no housekeeping for 2-3 days so I make sure to leave a bigger tip , the next time because after a couple days there is usually a bigger mess

I tip between 2-3 dollars a day but on the last day I will tip 5 dollars.

Uh...you're supposed to tip the housekeeping staff??? Really? Hot dog! I have a lot of past housekeepers mad at me, I think. I need to read up on travel etiquette!

I too, for years, didn't realize that I was supposed to tip housekeeping. I didn't grow up doing that, but then again, we rarely stayed in a motel/hotel.
I do tip now, it is a thankless job.:worship: My tipping is a daily thing with usually $2/day.

I know that a lot of people do tip housekeeping, but I'm sorry, that's not traditional, and IMHO an example of more and more people wanting to get in on a tip. Restaurant servers, check. Cabbies, check. Hairdresser, check. But housekeeping is a basic part of the hotel service that you're paying for; traditionally, it's never been a tipped position. JMHO.

I really was very shocked in hearing that people were tipping housekeeping staff, and tend to agree with you. The scenario I see in my head is leaving money for the housekeeping staff before you leave your room in the morning. When you think about it, you are tipping someone BEFORE their services are rendered. That doesn't seem correct, and on top of that, what if you don't like the job that they do? Are you giving them extra money in hopes that it will entice them into doing a good job? Cause I don't think I should have to pay extra for that either. The next day it could be someone else working so NOT leaving a tip the next day for shotty work the first day seems unfair. Plus, how exactly do you tip them? By leaving money out? I wouldn't want any housekeeping staff thinking that they can take whatever money I have lying around (not that I'd be silly enough to do this, it's an example). To each their own, I think, in this regard, I hope my housekeeping staff doesn't spit in my ice bucket! :rotfl:

We rarely tip housekeeping, why? Because we rarely have our rooms made up!! We generally go to DL on the weekend, so we might be there for 2 or maybe 3 nights, we do not have housekeeping do anything while we are there for that short of a time. We do try to take a few longer trips around bdays so if we are there 5 days or more then we will leave a tip at the end of stay because we have housekeeping come in after day 3 to refresh our towels. But again, even when we have them come in we don't leave a mess for them to clean up, we are very tidy in our room so not much is necessary. If/when we tip it's around $5. Call me cheap but we were never taught to tip unless you were messy or had a really long stay over 6 days.

remember that some of us Kiwis and Aussies have been relying on your expert advice so that we may understand the intricacies of tipping. And now you are trying to confuse us again!!! (only joking).

I have never tipped housekeeping before. I had never heard of it till the Disboards. I always assumed it was part of the price of the hotel, as they already throw on enough extras parking, resort fees etc.

Really?! My family and everyone else that I've traveled with have always tipped whenever we have our rooms made. We usually tip about $3/room if we have our rooms made daily or about $5 if we leave stay there a few nights and don't ask for housekeeping.

We have also tipped when we traveled abroad (to Europe and Asia). Maybe it's just us? :confused3

I don't really agree that "traditionally" tipping housekeeping has not been done. We have always tipped at motels and hotels - in some areas the cleaning staff is paid less than minimum wage (by keeping hours to a minimum, etc.) and the tips make up for it. As laws have changed, more housekeeping people are protected so you have to decide for yourself.

If you google housekeeping tips you will see the recommended amounts and also read that many people do NOT tip and many Do - this is certainly a choice each one of us must make.

I can say with certainty that my father, who was a business traveller all around the globe in the 1950's through the 80's, always tipped the housekeeping staff, so this is not really a new idea.

We tip $2 per night minimum (for just the two of us very neat adults) but more if we have grandkids with us or make a mess, need extras, etc.

I've never thought about tipping housekeeping before but I do think it's a nice thing to do. For anyone who is doing a big task such as cleaning someone's bathroom and handling their bedding they do deserve a tip. I really don't feel someone who lifts your suitcase needs a tip for the amount of work it takes.

Anyone who does a dirty job such as housekeeping and waiting on table definitely deserves a nice tip.

Thanks for all the replies.:)
