Tipping help please

We came back yesterday and enjoyed the Polynesian very much. Earline was our housekeeper the entire time and did a fabulous job. No towel animals or tricks, but a very clean, well stocked, comfortable room each afternoon. Turn down service was offered each evening but we rarely used it as we were in bed (or the 2yo was) rather early.

Trekker, you are quite right about the other minimum wage positions and your post made me think. I believe part of the difference for us is "face time". We never actually met Earline until the day we were leaving and I saw her (nametag) in the hall. I know it is not the same, but when I am interacting with the popcorn guy I can smile, ask how he is and thank him for his hard work. I felt that the tip we left Earline, with our "thanks" on the envelope was our only "face time" in her case. Make sense? I know it doesn't help the others' wallet, but in my mind it balances.

I agree with everything you say - it is tough to tip some of the people who perform many such wonderful and needed services that we are the recipients of.

I'm also Just engaging in discussion.

But I do at times feel that there is a huge emphasis put on tipping housekeepers - which up until about 2 years ago I had never heard of.

I really just want folks to recognize that there are a lot of people being paid minimum, just like housekeeping, that never even receive as much as a thank you for a job well done.

Everybody - please have a happy holiday season!

I know when I went to WDW in 1999 we tipped and thought it was normal to. When ever we travel we always tip and didn't think WDW mousekeeping deserved any less then the other hotels we have stayed at in the last 25 years. I don't think I've ever heard NOT to tip the housekeepers at any hotel before coming to the WDW boards. It seems like only the WDW guests are in the dark about such things. LOL! Even at hotels across the US there are maid envelopes on the dressers or, at the very least, a card telling you the maid's name. Does anyone think they are telling you their name for social reasons? At WDW we always tip $5 daily for 3 people in a room. When there are 4 traveling we tip $7. I do realize that tipping is optional for anything whether it is for the maid or for a waitress. I just feel that cleaning up after someone is the dirtiest job and most deserving of a tip there is. I know as I'm a mom and always find myself cleaning up after somebody! :D

Yes, I agree. All we can do is at least say thank you when we have a chance.

Everybody - please have a happy holiday season!
