Tipping at Sonic?

Are you or aren't you 'supposed' to tip at Sonic? When I ask people around here, some do and some don't.

I don't; my reasons:
- (This is an assumption on my part) The carhops don't make any less than they do at other fast food places.
- Sonic food is already slightly more expensive than other fast-food places
- Drinks are a lot more expensive - their base cost is more, and you don't get free refills.

So, do you tip, and if so, how much? Do you tip based on a percentage? What if you just stop in for a drink?

(For those who don't have a Sonic nearby, it's a drive-in fast food place with a bunch of stores in the mid south, and spreading out to the coasts.)

I usually tip at Sonic, unless I am only getting a drink. Why? I guess I just always have! I figure they are trudging out to my car with my food and they don't drop it! (usually, that is!!)

We can only go to Sonic while in Florida. We don't tip at the drive-trough but we always tip about $1.50 for car service. I like the personal service and I tip for it. I am sure they don't expect tips but do welcome them.

I always tip, but not really a percentage. I usually leave whatever the change is and a dollar. My DH does not usually tip, however.

Just the change... I don't tip a certain percentage at Sonic because like you I feel they make actual wages. So if they end up making $10 or so by people's change(not the paper part) they've done pretty well.

My daughter used to work at one and she got some tips. She was paid minimum wage.

We usually go through the drive through so don't bother with the tip.

I've always tipped, usually a dollar. If I just get a drink I'll tip about 50 cents. I just always have. My best friend worked at Sonic when we were teenagers and she did make minimum wage. She actually did pretty good in tips too though.

We usually tip a dollar or two. Dh and I have both worked in the service field and we appreciate the car service, rather than having to go through a drive-thru window. If we walk up to the window and get the order ourselves for the outside tables, we do not tip.

We always tipped when we went to Sonic. One of my best friends use to work there, so we would always give him a nice tip when we would go.

I always tip with the change and it's a dollar or less most times.

I appreciate them bringing my food to me, and bless the ones on roller skates who don't drop everything. I know I wouldn't make it an hour trying to do that!!

I pay with the little credit card machine on the menu board and it doesn't ask me if I want to leave a tip......so no, I don't tip.

Unfortunatly, we don't have any up here...Just A & W's and they are SOOOOO much better foodwise (insert heavy sarcasism...) .

I never tipped at Sonic at home, up here they seem to expect it at A&W... I do , but it's just kinda weird...

I mean..if I tip there..should I tip the Burger King cashiers too??

I haven't ever received tip-worthy service at a Sonic, so- no, I have not tipped there.

I usually tip the change from the bill b/c our Sonic servers SKATE to the car.
Also, our servers are happy to refill drinks, which are 1/2 price weekday afternoons.

I don't tip when I go throught the drive-through, though.

I normally don't tip at Sonic. Ours is the slooooooooowest food service establishment I have ever encountered plus they aren't making waitress wages. I don't tip at BK or Chick fil A so why tip at Sonic? I love the option of paying with a card when you order.

Now before I am criticized for being cheap, let me say that I have waited tables in the past and I tip do well at sit down restaurants.

NO...it's fast food, and I don't tip for fast food.
