Tipping a hairdresser who works from home???

I have never tipped my hairdresser. She does own the salon, but I'm not sure if I would tip otherwise, either.

She charges me $25 for a cut, and it takes 30 minutes. So she's making at least $50 an hour, then, unless she does a perm or a color, and then she makes even MORE.

I think $50+ an hour is an adequate salary for a hairdresser. Yeesh.

(FLAME AWAY - -LOL!)

I am not aware of any state that allows cosmetology services to be performed "in your home". When I went to cos. school:rolleyes1 in 94-95 it was made very clear that you would loose you license for doing such a thing!
I live in Ohio....

4713-11-08 Resident salons and mobile home salons.

Except for beauty salons licensed prior to September 5, 1977, salons shall maintain a separate entrance which shall not open off the living quarters, and which shall not have any doors, openings, or any other access leading to the living quarters or residential areas. Entrance through garages or any other rooms into the salon shall not be permitted. Mobile homes, motor homes, trailers or any type of recreational vehicle are not designed for commercial use under the Ohio building codes and therefore prohibited for licensure as any type of salon or tanning facility.

and figured since the OP was from NJ I looked up their codes and found basically the same code. NO in home services.

now, if you are talking about a LEGAL salon that is a separate premise, then by all means, I would tip. I would not even go to someone that was running an illegal shop out of their home. Most people are not aware of the laws, and that is understandable. This was drilled into our heads during school ;) we are not allowed to legally cut anyones hair in our home except those who physically live in your household.

I always thought that if they are renting their chair, they get tipped. I never tip an owner. Am i wrong on this? Did I just fall off the turnip truck?

My hairdresser comes to my home. She's very, very inexpensive and I tip her. I'm happy to do it.

Well, if you thinks she owns the salon and is able to "keep" all the money you are paying her for the haircut, you are sadly mistaken.

And if she is good at what she does and makes YOU look good for everyday in between your haircuts then try living w/o her (or a hairdresser.) Standing all day, doing great cuts, talking pleasantly to people all day long etc. is not the world's easiest work.

My next door neighbor does our hair. In fact, she does the whole family. We do tip her, but I do know that she has all of her supplies to pay for, and she also special accomodates us. Since we live so close, we just plan our hair days whenever, which is nice if I'm in a bind. Some days we make a night of it, and cook dinner too. She has kids our kids age, so I know how hard it is for her to do hair and have her DH cook dinner and then have both of them keeping track of the kids, so I tip her. Not to mention the fact that if my kids are sleeping, she'll come over to my house and do my hair there instead. I tip because she's also a friend, too, and I love getting in on a moments notice! :thumbsup2

Thanks, everyone....you guys gave me a lot to think about either way. Although now I think I'm even MORE confused!! ROFL

Well I work out of my home -I'm a massage therapist. And I'd say 75% of my clients do tip. I don't get upset when a client doesn't tip - I realize that to some the $65 an hour is a stretch. And some strictly adhere to the "don't tip the owner"

To me the tip is a sign that the client values and appreciates my work. I may not get upset when a client doesn't tip; but if two clients call wanting the same appointment time - one reqularly tips and the other doesn't - I'm sure you know which one will get the appointment.
