Tip Lyft/Uber Driver - Question on Standards

I would have skipped the tip.

Had it been my money I probably would have. I pretty much only use rideshare for work travel, so I really can't afford to get dinged too bad on my rider score.

May I ask why you should tip in the app? Ialways try to tip with cash because I thought that the drivers would prefer it and I can be sure that they are getting the tip that they are owed.

I tip in the app to make sure I get reimbursed. There are also drivers that will try to shake you down for more by threatening a bad rider review for not tipping.

Wow, I had never thought about getting dinged on ride reviews. Is there a way to see how I'm rated? Given that I almost always tip cash, now I'm worried.

In the Uber app, click on account in the lower right corner and you can see your customer rating just below your name in the upper left. If it gets too low you can find yourself being denied service or having to wait longer.

I think the route might be a little different depending on platform, or maybe it's just because I rarely use UBER. I was able to find mine and I have 5 5* and 2 1*. One of the one stars I'm sure is the driver I talked about upthread that didn't have any space for luggage on an airport pick up. I think the other was a trip in Denver where we had 4 people in the car and the person riding in the front seat wouldn't shut up.

I typically only tip on longer trips or trips that involve more, idk, "annoying" traversing... like trips to the airport, around theme parks, etc, because these are confusing, I know, for me, so they have to be for drivers. When I'm going 5 minutes down the road but don't want to walk to brunch because I'm in heels, I often don't tip unless it's just an absolute gem of a driver who impacts my day. Is this bad? Y'all let me know in the comments. I'm just a busy mama trying to keep up with the times! I'm still trying to understand tipping these days.

tipping is at your discretion so it's really up to you. I do know that rideshare drivers don't make a ton of money directly from their companies, so tips are where they get a good chunk of income-not that that should be the riders' issue, I'm just noting it as part of the overall perspective.

For short trips like you noted, I usually tip a dollar or two-sometimes more if it was a really amazing driver. For the longer/more 'complicated' trips I'll tip a few more dollars. I think you'll get a lot of different perspectives on this so you do what works for you.

Tipping is at your discretion. I found this online:

Lyft drivers are guaranteed to receive at least 70% of the rider's fare each week, after external fees like taxes and insurance are deducted, and they receive 100% of tips, adjustments, benefits, and tolls.

So they do not receive all of the funds we pay for our rides.
