You know where you go in and get your own coffee and they have the tip jar on the counter or at the drive up window, do you tip? DO you throw all your change in or just some?

How about carside to go? do you tip them?

Just curious!

I don't do car side but if I did I might give a dollar. Haven't really thought about it. I never put anything in the random tip jars. And no I don't feel the least bit bad about it either. I do tip bartenders but not the guy at the ice cream shop.

I don't throw money in tip jars if it's a real bussiness, like dunkin donuts. Tip jars usually means that the people are making at least minimum wage, and looking for a few extra bucks.

I will throw it in if it's a snack stand. Usually because it's for a fundraiser, and the people working it aren't getting paid to stand there.

I do go out of my way when some one does something nice. Like when they guy at pizza hut gave us an extra two liter bottle on top of the fountain sodas with our meal. We gave him extra 5$ because he saved us like 10$ on drinks. I see tips meant for people who make a server's wage.

Of course I've never understood tipping a hair dresser/barber. Kari always tips 5$, but she only goes every 3-4 months.

I don't put anything in those kinds of tip jars. That is just tacky to me. If they were bringing me my food or something like that I might consider it. But why on Earth should I tip somebody at a place like Taco Bell (and yes, I have seen tip jars in there)? I'm the one taking the food to table, clearing the table, getting my own drink and refills, condiments, etc. If you want tips, work in a traditionally tipped establishment.

I agree.. I have seen "tip jars" in some of the oddest places..:confused3

Most tip jars just irk me to no end. They have become so common place though. So much so that my DD when she was younger thought it was ok to put a tip jar out on the coffee table for herself.

I do tip for carside pickup. I figure they have to pack everything up and make sure everything you might need is included.

I throw change in the tip jar when it's in my hand. I tip the curbside about $2.

I can understand tipping for something like that. It would be the same as tipping at Sonic. I don't do Carside pick Up so the issue has never come up for me.

My SIL works curbside at Outback steakhouse. There they depend on there tips they make much less then minium wage

Nobody here is talking about traditional tipping establishments such as Outback. We're talking places like a coffee shop or Taco Bell or similar establishment where tipping is not considered traditional and frankly, there is no reason to tip. Where the customer is pretty much doing everything for themselves short of actually preparing the food. A discussion on restaurant tipping would be an entirely different thread.

Tip jar??? I thought those were free samples.

Tip jars are very tacky, used to see them all the time at bagel type places when we were in NY. We don't do take out much anymore nowadays.

I tip taxi drivers, maids, wait-staff at restaurants and the take-put people at restaurants (Same places I'd eat IN if I didn't have such a schedule).

I don't use tip jars for either drive-through or the coffee place.

If we had a Sonic, I'd tip there too. We went to one in Florida while we visisted the out-laws and they got mad when I tipped the gal. I got into a bit of an argument and won, because the gal has to come to your car and she ran back and forth a few times getting stuff my MIL kept asking for, so why not?

I tip about 10 percent in the carside to go. They don't really wait on you, but they do take your order and bring the food out to you. It's not a full service, so I don't think it warrants the 15 percent or more tip.

At Dunkin Donuts and even our local Bagel place I usually tip them something. They are providing a service even if it is just loose change.

I am very loyal to my Bagel shop and 9 times out of 10 they depend on the tips in that jar. They know my name and know exactly how I like my sandwich. I hadn't gone there in about 5 months and I went in the other day....had explained I had gotten laid off....the owner gave me my breakfast for free.....So I put $5 bucks in the tip jar. Not everywhere is like that but they are providing a service.

I don't usually tip when I pick up my food indoors, with the exception of an ice cream shop in a resort town we visit regularly. It is staffed for the summer by college kids and I always leave them a dollar.

RadioNate's post got me thinking - why do we tip bartenders when we are sitting at the bar but not someone at an ice cream shop? It takes about the same amount of effort to make an ice cream sundae as it does to mix most drinks.

Yes I do - the Dunkin Donuts I use to go to every morning before work, I would walk in and the girl knew exactly how I wanted my coffee and would have it ready. I appreciate that type of service

She was taking about Outback CURBSIDE, which is what is being discussed.
