I know that it might sound strange, because I thought it was strange when someone told it to me, but it works.
It your kids have ear pain during landings ask the flight attendants for two cups. If you can get a couple of napkins and have them wet with some warm water (they should be damp, not dripping). Put the napkins in the cups and have your kids cup them over their ears. Even without the napkins it helps equalize the pressure. I have used this on many trips with my daughter (she's now 8) and it really helps.
On my last few flights the pressure has even bothered me so I did it once. And it does work.
