Tip added without my permission?

This is crazy. I just can't believe people do this.

I do have an incident to share that is not the same but was stealing just the same.
Last Jan we ate at Fultons on the deluxe dining plan. Waiter was horrible, food was bad ( which is strange cause we love Fulton) waiter brings me the Check I ask about all the. Ogre toons and changes because it had us down for 16 dining credits. There were 4 adults. He took it back and corrected it. Then it was still wrong. After 5 attempts it was finally correct on the dining plan. We were over an hour waiting on our bill. Yes, we had asked for a manager by then, but never got to see one. Anyway they have tip area 15% 18% 20% tells you the amount. Well I had been double Checking them all week and they were correct so hubby says just top him so we can leave. I had been using a disney gift card to tip but since we had already been an hour waiting I looked at bill and tipped a cording to suggested 15% which was $70.00. Left cash and walked out. As we are walking to the bus it hits me that the tip was way off. Like more than double what it should have been. I look at the receipt and all the charges he had put on and taken off never changed the top amount from his first ring up mistakes. He was getting tipped on his errors in the computer. I was mad. Went back and was tx there was nothing they could do about it because I tipped him in cash. I asked to speak to him and he was not there any longer. Seriously it hadn't been 15 minutes. I did complain to the hotel and asked who I should speak to. They didn't have an answer for me just said they would never tip in cash cause there is nothing you can do about that.
Needless to say I will whip out my phone and calculate the tips myself from now on. Regardless how tacky it seems.
By the way I typo ally tip a min of 20 %. I only tipped the suggested 15% because I was tired if dealing with the whole thing and guess what it bit me in the backside.

How in the world did you not notice that $70 was way too much of a tip for only 4 people??? Was there alcohol involved?:rotfl:

My sister left a small tip at a local restaurant for a meal where the service from the waitress was awful, did all the math herself to total it. When she checked her credit card on line, the waitress gave herself a bigger tip and ran the charge. Sis called restaurant and ripped the manager about his staff running a fraudulent charge.

No alcohol involved. I think between the hour trying to get the bill fixed and the horrible service and having to kids (niece and nephew) with us , I just was fed up and ready to leave. Didn't think to question their tipping schedule. It will never happen again. That is for sure..

I wouldn't let them get away with it either. Imagine how much they make in a day on all the travelers going through that airport.

Oh my what an eye opener. I usually kinda check but look and places and figure yeah I was there...from now on I will keep receipts and check charges online. Never even imagined servers would do this. I had trouble with a meal my last trip in Fultons too and emailed when I got back to room, I think Levy the parent company and the manager contacted me down in Disney and was reslolve. We go to Fultons when down at Disney and have their loyalty card. but last food and total experience left a bad taste and not sure we will be going back.

My husband keeps telling me I need to make sure to take my son there at the end of the month but I am just not sure. It use to be awesome but not so sure anymore. May do Narcossee's or Bluezoo.

We would go to Fultons often especially when staying at SSR(we go in March and Oct for 3 wks each time) and got so we knew a waitress and dealt alot with her(Jill) but she was not there this day. But as for the food it just has not been the same so to be honest I would go somewhere else. Last time we never got the cheese and crackers with the card with the recipe(not that it was important) and the food was meager and tasteless. Sorry to say.

i have a bad habit of putting 0.00 or a line instead of cash, but that is the best thing to do. servers will often tamper with tips and if no one reports it they will get away with it. for ex. even if you leave a tip they can change a 4 into an 8 or a 3 into an 8. I put tips on my card sometimes but always check the posted amount a few days later. I had a friend in high school who at her first waitressing job all the servers did this. they taught her how and I was shocked at how good of a run they had because when they were only adding a few $$$ on most people did not in fact realize it. the way they got caught was a customer called and spoke to a manager and asked him to look at his slip and refund the difference. I think they noticed it was tampered with and looked thru all the slips for that day and many others were. this is theft and any time you see it should you first contact the restaurant and if they refuse then dispute the charge.

One thing I do, whenever I write the tip, I make sure I precede the amount with a dollar sign to prevent a crooked server from placing another digit in front of it.

Oh, that is a VERY good idea!!!

Add me to the list who will forever write CASH on the line!!!! Good Grief!!

Happened to us years ago at TGI Fridays. The waiter was horrible and left him a 10% tip. He wrote a one in front and gave himself a $13 tip. Husband called the restaurant. Needless to say he was fired. Now I put a dollar sign in front of the tip amount. So far, it seems to be working.

I would never put 0.00, way too easy for a server to add a number in front of that and give themselves a tip. I always write cash or a slash through the tip line and I always drop the total down.

I ALWAYS write in CASH in giant letters! I don't want anybody going back into my charge and messing with the amount EVER to add their tip!!!!

I always write cash when I leave a cash tip but, mainly, for other reasons. I don't want whoever is processing and reviewing credit card slips at the restaurant think I intentionally didn't tip due to poor service. I also want the waiter to know I left cash in case one of his coworkers took the money for "safekeeping" and so he'll know to get the cash off the table before another diner decides to grab part of the tip.

I don't keep as much of an eye on this as I used to, this thread has been a great reminder! One thing I ALWAYS do is take the 'customer copy' so hopefully servers think I keep a good eye on it and reconcile my charges. I figure if you leave the extra copy on the table the server probably thinks you don't keep track of your charges as much...but I could be totally making that theory up.

Wow - that is just horrible! Thank you for posting about this, I will keep a closer eye on it. I will definitely begin writing "cash" on the tip line - that is a really great idea!

:thumbsup2 Great idea! I usually leave cash, thinking the server would perfer that.

It's taken a while, but I finally trained DH to write "cash on table" in the tip line. Now I'm working on my MIL - who says it's smart, she just forgets :thumbsup2

wow. I always put a line through but now I will write cash tip instead. One thing I found is that some of the restaurants who participate in restaurants.com promotions require a big tip, like 18% of what the full price order would have been. Had this happen when just two of us were eating and there was only one other occupied table. And they billed us for the other table's tab (easy to spot they were drinking and we weren't). I always check my bill closely.

DD is a waitress, she says cash tips are what the staff wants. Where she works if you tip on credit card it comes through in her pay check and she has to pay tax and social security on it. Plus she doesn;t get the money for a long time, their pay cycle is two weeks, and they are always two weeks behind, so if you credit card tip her on day one of the pay cycle she won't see the money for a month.:worried:

It never occurred to me that this would even happen. I live in Canada, and here when you are tipping you either add it in yourself on the debit/credit machine or leave it in cash, that way it can't be tampered with. But I will definitely keep it in mind when I am travelling!

I usually just write 'on table' in the tip line, but I like the idea of writing 'cash' better.

Another thing I do, if I've had really bad service and leave less than my usual 20% is write on the receipt the reason for the lessor amount. I don't want someone just assuming I'm a lousy tipper, I want them to know why I tipped what I did. I have to say that seldom happens, as we generally have decent service.

I get the delay problem, but she's supposed to be reporting that tip income anyway, no matter how she gets it.
