Tinnitus anyone?

I've had it since a KISS concert in the late 70's. Too close to the speakers in the rear of the venue. Life goes on.

How can you forget about tinnitus , especially at night, when you don't hear anything else, except that annoying ringing.
It’s called habituation. Your brain knocks out constant noises when you are not thinking about them. Like when you are speaking to someone, in a bar, you are not listening to the next table’s conversation. Or have you ever sat in a room when heating/ cooling switches off, and you only then realise it was making a noise?

My Dad suffers terribly with tinnitus....He's tried hearing aids. My basic understanding is that the hearing aids were programmed with a background noise which is supposed to train your brain to focus on some other noise besides the tinnitus. He only tried them for a few weeks and gave up and returned the hearing aids.

Based upon what my audiologist told me about getting used to hearing aids, your dad likely didn't give them enough time for his brain to retrain to interpreting audio impulses better.

It was 3-4 months before I got used to my hearing aids and didn't notice I was hearing differently as much as I did initially. My audiologist said to give them 1-2 at least before giving up.

I have mild tinnitus in one ear but was told to live with it as the tinnitus programming is a definite distraction unless tinnitus is so bad you can't stand it.

Thank you for sharing this. I agree that he didn’t give them enough time. He wanted an instant fix which didn’t happen and I feel he wasn’t wearing them enough during the day. He could only return them within 30 days, so he did unfortunately. I really wish he would have given it more time.

I have tinnitus in my left ear. Hopefully caused by a retracted eardrum. Going to the ENT today and getting a tube place in my ear and I'm scared to death!

Tinnitus can be a symptom of b12 deficiency/Pernicious Anemia.

Check your b12 levels & don't expect your GP to fully understand the condition and treatment, if low b12 is an issue.
Just want to bump this up.

Tinnitus can be a symptom of b12 deficiency/pernicious anemia.
Vitamin d & folate deficiency, as well.

It can also be due to hypothyroidism.

Even though I hated them to start, I did wear them consistently--another thing my audiologist impressed upon me as important for me to adjust more quickly. That and the fact that I'll never again hear as well as I once did, but I do hear better.

I can understand his giving up on them if he thought they'd make a substantial difference. I still dislike how weird my hearing is with them. But, I can hear most of the high pitched sounds I've otherwise lost.

It was being unable to hear the kitchen timer though standing right beside it that convinced me I needed hearing aids. I used to be able to hear that from any other room of our apartment. That'll scare some sense into a person and motivate you to get a hearing test.

Research has shown that people with untreated hearing loss are much more likely to get dementia. That sure scared me into wearing aids.

I have mild to moderate tinnitus and seemingly is in both ears, however, I understand it isn't from there, it is from the brain. My understanding is that there are many ways that could develop. I worked in web printing for about 14 years and never had any ear protection. It wasn't a thing back then. They think that is what caused it. As far as hearing loss, so far only a little conflict with the highest of pitch sounds, like, they say, a woman's voice. I don't find that a negative as I was able to truthfully say, Gee, I didn't hear you dear, what was it you wanted? :rolleyes1:littleangel:
