I am thinking of doing a surprise trip to NY city the week after Christmas. I am hoping to stay right in Times Square as it will be just my daughters and myself. I would appreciate any suggestions on a nice but affordable hotel. Thank you

I stayed at Pod 51 once for a night. It is a nice hotel as long as you pay attention to what it is actually is. It is a quick walk to the subway (53rd/Lex) and a quick ride to Times Square. Another hotel to look at is Hilton Times Square Central. It is across the street from McDonalds and if you walk through and go out the other door your in Times Square. The rooms were nice and it included breakfast.

I like Hyatt Place in Midtown . . .it's showing up around $350/night. I like it that they have full size coffee cups and free breakfast, even in NYC. Also, the people who work there were really nice to us and let us check in at 7 a.m. after a red eye. I've stayed at the Avalon Hotel in Midtown and Ink48 in Hells Kitchen, and didn't like either nearly as much. Never stayed right in Times Square. I eventually moved to NYC for a short stint, and that became a place to avoid. ;)

I really hate Times Square. I’d suggest the Omni Berkshire. It’s at Fifth and 52nd—about a seven minute walk to Times Square. It’s about two to Rockefeller Centre. We just got back on Wednesday and we’re able to walk everywhere from the Omni. It has a large drugstore/grocery store and Starbucks one block away. I don’t consider any other hotel when in New York anymore. Great hotel and perfect location.

Are you doing any theatre? We stay at the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square in the theatre district a lot. This is not right in the heart of Times Square, but very close.

If you can postpone your trip to after New Years, rates come down a ton. This hotel was running $700 night Dec. 29th - 1st (New Years is very popular in NYC). We though for Jan. 1 - 3, got a rate of $119 a night. Lots of the Christmas decorations are up through Jan. 7.

My first two times in New York we stayed at the Hotel Edison, which I do like a lot, although our room last time (an upgraded room) was very sparse. We’re trying the Hilton Garden Inn on 8th this time (early January).

When in New York I’m at the theatre most nights so I like being in the Theatre District, but in the daytime I prefer to avoid walking through Times Square if possible so usually choose to walk uptown to get the subway. The Hilton Garden Inn therefore seemed like a good choice! The rooms also have fridges and microwaves which was also a big selling point for me!

We stay at the Westin's Times Square, location can't be beat, and the security for us is important... While not cheap, its so close to everything and easy walking. Subway right around the corner.

The Marriott Marquis is an absolute zoo of a hotel (yes, I have stayed there) and it is outrageously expensive this time of year. I actually very much doubt you can even get a reservation there right before New Year’s anyway. You should have booked months ago. I would give it a pass. Personally, I would look a few blocks away just to get out of that madhouse area.

We stayed at the Marriott Marquis for New Year's a few years ago. It was a last minute decision to drive up to NYC for New Year's but we got a last minute reservation no problem, even using DH's Rewards points. But then they "upsold" us to a Times Square view room for an insane amount of money I still can't believe we decided to pay. We were glad we did though because it was incredibly cold that year and it was great to be able to watch everything from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

We really enjoyed it, but it was a madhouse of a place. Just the elevator banks were like a social experiment.

Stayed at the Marriott Marquis this past July. Was upgraded to Times Squre view for free. Ate brunch at their restaurant which was pricey but good. The hottest show on Broadway-Hamilton is playing a stone’s throw away at the Richard Rogers Theater. Location cannot be beat. We stayed on points so a bargain. I would stay again.

We like theatre like elphaba91 and the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square is a place we stay at a lot because it's so close to so many different theatres. If we go to different shows from each other, it's so easy to meet back up at the hotel. We'll be back there that same first week in January. DS 22 likes Times Square, so it's nice for him to be close to that and this Hilton Garden Inn is just two or three blocks from that. Prices FYI for hotels starting Jan. 1 are really inexpensive and lot of Christmas decorations are still up. We are going then to see NYC decked out with Christmas decorations on the cheap.

We went last year the week after Christmas and stayed at the Hilton Times Square on 42nd street. Really nice hotel walking distance to the theater. Safe, modern with fantastic views of Manhattan. We had views of Empire State Building from our room. Highly recommend it!

This is where we stayed. We won the trip so we had no say, but we were happy with this hotel. Everything was close but not SO close to be annoying!

I would avoid Times Square. I would look for a hotel next to a major subway line that makes getting around much easier. I would look for lower rates during touristy times in lower Manhattan at the hotels favored by business travelers. Many of those hotels are quick subway ride from midtown.

This spring we stayed at residence inn that was about midway between Times Square and Central Park. We loved the location.
