I have been wondering how close the corrals are monitored as far having read that you have to provide proof of previous times. I just did the ToT and it seemed that people were just filling in spaces where they wanted. I myself was not sure where to go, never having done more than a 5K. Is the marathon any different?

The corrals are monitored. Your corral will be printed on your bib. The corrals are fenced and you will be checked into your corral. You are not to go forward a corral, but you can step back if you want to be with a friend.

Your bibs are colored coded - and there is a volunteer steering you right left forward, or wait...

no big deal - I was in the last wave, last corral (no timed proof - general population) and I still finished (barely!!) ahead of the sweepers!!

can you describe the various corrals and waves? (a total newbie here)

They set up big areas to hold people in at the start. One side will have A, B, C and D corrals. If you have an A on your bib, you will start in corral A which is at the front. That will be the people with the best projected finishing times. If you didn't supply a time or entered a slower finishing time, you will start in the back. It may take 15 minutes for the people in the back to start.

For the half, they had wave starts. I think that there were 5 or 6 corrals for the half last year. They started in waves so the first two corrals would go first. About 10 minutes later the next two would go. That spread out the course a bit so that it wasn't so packed.

You can check out Roberts site Disneyrunning.com for more detail on the corrals.

If you do want to go back a corral to join a friend, do you have to do something "official" to change it, or can you just enter the other corral?

No, you can always go back. So, if you are assigned corral "B" you could drop back to C or D on race day, but if you wanted to move up to A, you would have to bring proof of time to the expo.
