Time to update the tipping thread

I see a lot of questions like, can I pay for a tip using a gift card/cash when I'm on the dining plan? So I think it would be helpful to clear that up.

Also on a similar note, I see questions asking about side items/alcoholic drinks/etc and how to pay for those (MB, cash, gift card).

Can the 18% "mandatory" tip be re-negotiated in case of poor service...?
Only if you speak to a manager...
The mandatory tip policy (and law) in Florida, is that if a tip policy is posted where it can be read by a customer (ie: menu, menu board, etc) then that tip is part of your cost to dine.
It would be no different than ordering a steak for $30.00, and then deciding it was only worth $15.00. You still are obligated to pay $30.00.
The ONLY way to decrease the mandatory tip amount is to notify the manager anD said manager then decreases or negates the tip.
Hope this helps answer all those pesky "Do I have to tip the mandatory amount on my check?"

the tipping thread sticky is old and needs a fresh life

1) EXACTLY, in which regards.
2) People at WDW tend to over tip.
. . . and by a large amount
. . . they get over-enthused by the vacation and the atmosphere
. . . they simply give way too much of a tip for average or mediocre service
3) The percentages on the posting are still accurate.

Here's a question....when they add the 18% tip when you use the TIW card, is it 18% before tax?

Here's some answers, delete if not allowed :)

Servers, bartenders, cocktail servers, room service and valet

tips are included at CRT, SOA, HDDR and MBYBBQ

the server pays the tax so total

no, mousekeepers make a regular wage

only the manager can adjust auto gratuity

I agree with all but would suggest to add Bell Services (both pickup and drop off) to your list that I bolded above :)

Cheshire Figment whom many of us miss very much used to post this example of the TiW discount. The gratuity is based on the original amount of the bill before tax.

This is correct. TiW auto-gratuity is figured on the before discount, before tax amount of the bill.

Just a general travel tip. We always tip our room housekeeper daily instead of at the end of the stay like my father did. There are two reason's for this. One, the obvious, is the housekeeper knows she will be tipped and since we always request extra towels we get plenty. The other issue is the housekeeper on your first day may not be the same as on your last day.

I used to be a server at WDW and many of my friends still work as servers or bartenders there, so I might be able to answer some questions.

As for how to tip when using the DDP, that depends. The server should bring you a copy of your bill when you ask for it, and there should be a place to write the tip and the total. If you wish to leave a tip on the room charge, a credit card, a gift or rewards card, write the amount in. If you plan to leave cash, write cash or inform the server you'll be leaving cash. That way the server knows ahead of running the plan through how you will be tipping. You will then receive a copy of your receipt once the dining plan has been run through, and it will list the tip amount and how it was charged.

I know tipping and having a custom cake tacked on to your dining bill has come up. I guess I'm thinking the addition of an FYI that your $150 cake (or however much you might spend on a cake) will be factored into your suggested gratuity (or your mandatory 18% with a party of 6 or more OR TiW)...even if you do all of the cake cutting/serving yourself or just get that cake boxed up to go. I know some people are surprised by this since some cakes are more than the total for the meal and it can mean a really hefty tip. It's been a while since I've looked at the tipping info, so I can't remember this being on there, but I know it throws people when their gratuity or suggested gratuity factors in cake price.

Since the update of this thread is for the restaurant board, we will not be focusing on anything other than dining.

Thanks for all your suggestions :)

Not sure if either of these are helpful, but -

1) The "factor" when using TIW is 1.032. So take the menu price, (say a $9.99 hamburger) and multiply it times 1.032 to get $10.31 for your total price for burger, tax, and tip.

This is really helpful if you need to break the bill down afterwards to figure out who owes what to the TIW cardholder. And of course, if you add extra tip, that's not factored in.

It's also not accurate for times when there is no tip (Value food courts & AK QS) or if it's a meal where tip is included. If I recall correctly, the factor for the QS is .852 ($9.99 menu price x.852 = $8.51 for that hamburger.)

2) Yes, you can tip with gift cards. A couple of tips - make sure the card has enough on it for meal AND tip (if you give your server a $25 gift card for a $22 meal and you want to leave a 20% tip, there won't be enough left on the GC.) You give them a gc and they run it like a credit card - meaning you write the tip and leave it in the folio, they don't scan a second time - so if you indicate $4.40 tip but the GC only has $3, they get stiffed. Secondly: it takes a few minutes for that to process. So let's say in our above example we had a $30 GC, used it for our $22 meal (leaving $8) and left a $4.40 tip ($3.60 balance left on GC.) If we walked straight out the door to buy a $5 Mickey pretzel, it will go through - but then the GC will only have $3 left on it to use towards your server's tip.

(I don't know how long running the card takes - I think I've only had it happen once, and there was still enough on the GC for the tip. There was just more than there "should" have been after buying the second item and it made me realize tip had not yet been deducted.)

Feel free to reword or discard those - thought they might help!

We generally look to see what our meal cost will be (approximately) using the DDP before going on a trip. We then have an envelope of cash that is divided out for each meal based up our earlier estimates (using online menus) We then get our DMB scanned and pay the tips in cash. We always throw in about 20% more into the envelope to accommodate for being off in the estimation and to reward great service outside of 20%.
'

This seems like a great plan! We use our MagicBands to charge the tip to our linked card, but have also tipped in cash before as well.
