Time to remove Indy speedway

I don't have children, so I cannot say if it's popular with them or not. It isn't on my list of to do attractions. There does always seem to be people who want to ride it. I would like to at least see them replace the cars with electric cars. I do wish there was enough room there to make it a Radiator Springs, but I don't think there would be. I think it would be great to bring it up to date and make it fresh with a Cars theme. Little kids, especially boys, just love Cars. They could have cars that look like all the different characters.

Honestly, until Disney starts adding some new stuff to the parks and updating what's there, I wouldn't fight for anything to be removed. There's currently a ride there that kids adore. I adored it when I was little, DD adored it when she was little, and I'm sure my grandsons will love it when they're old enough. Until there is a plan to replace it with a better ride, I'd never vote to get rid of anything. Look at DHS now.

Do I like it? Nope. But, my dd did when she was younger. And, obviously, so do many, many other youngsters! As already noted, that attraction has always got a huge line.....I can't imagine what the other attractions would be like if those people weren't in line, or riding the Speedway. Not classic Disney? I guess I'm unclear as to what, exactly, 'classic Disney' means.
And the statement that it would fit better at a Six Flags? Geez Louise....not our Six Flags NE! That place is chock-a-block full of thrill rides! Seems to have very few things for really little ones to do.

WDW is all about things you can do as a family. There are going to be some things that just don't appeal to adults. I rode that darn thing once, just to say I had done it. I hated it. But, it isn't meant for me!!! It would be great if they could redo the cars...use electric cars. Perhaps add some CARS theming. But, remove it completely? Nope, not a great idea IMHO.

All my kids loooove it. We ride multiple times a trip. I want to see the cars replaced with something quieter and less smelly

I went to DisneyLand when I was 3, 9, and 13. My wife and I went to WDW for the first time when we were 34. I made a list of "must do" attractions based on my memory.

The Speedway was on that list. I remember loving it so much and we just had to do it. Sure it's not as good at 34, but I can honestly say that I thought it was a top ride when I was a kid.

For those interested my "must do" list based off memories of going as a kid was: Pirates, Jungle Cruise, Speedway, Matterhorn (which they don't have at WDW I was disappointed to find out), Dumbo, and the dark rides like Pooh, Pan, Small World.

My girls (5 &8) love it, simply for the fact that they get to drive a car. Sure it stinks and it is unsightly and very hot waiting in line for it. But they get to drive a car without risk of running into anyone else...except the car ahead of them of course :)

While this doesn't have a big appeal to me, I know many people love this experience. However, this is a pretty good piece of real-estate within the park that could be used for something else bigger and better should the imagineers/execs see the opportunity to increase park attendance by ushering in a popular attraction based on a successful movie release. Long winded sentence there... digest it please :)

I'll never understand the hate-on for this attraction. Sure, it's easy to see how an adult would grow out of this attraction. But you cannot forget some universal truths:

  • Kids like to be given the freedom to do things that they cannot ordinarily do.
  • Kids under the ages of 15/16 (depending on the state's learner's permit laws) cannot drive cars.
  • At the Speedway, kids are given the freedom to drive a car--something that they ordinarily cannot do. And they take joy from that.

This is never going to change. Kids who are tall enough are always going to love driving a car, and kids who aren't tall enough are going to love it when mom or dad lets them take the wheel. Or push down on the pedal. It was true in 1955...it is true today...and it will be true as long as there are age limits on driving. Give a kid a chance to do something that they are otherwise not allowed to do and you have a happy kid. Of course the attraction is lame if you are 25. But so are a lot of other things. (I'm lookin at you TriCeratop Spin).

The Haunted Mansion is sitting on far more MK land than the speedway.
Maybe the Imagineers/execs could see the opportunity to increase park attendance by ushering
in a popular attraction based on a successful movie release.
It would not be too much of a challenge designing a Frozen II attraction that could fit into the HM ride building space.
HM is getting pretty old.

See what I did there? ;)

"Racing" my brother is one of my clearest memories of our first family trip to WDW 42 years ago! As an adult, I don't want to ride it or to ever wait in that long line but DD12 likes it so we will do it again next trip. I love the suggestion to upgrade to electric cars and I agree that some better scenery or 'themeing' wouldn't hurt. There are several other "classic" rides that I think are a waste of space but one man's trash...

I'm not a big fan, and there's always a long line in the hot sun but my daughter LOVES this ride. She's 8 and on our last trip she was finally able to reach the pedal herself and she was so thrilled.

Ha! You are indeed clever... Oh well, I'd still haunt the place

I don't care what they do with it, because I don't have any children. But children LOVE this ride. Apparently many children secretly wish they could drive a real car.

If I assume correctly, I made a slight against a classic attraction being closed for something bigger and better. Robo was clever to point out the same could be done for any attraction, anywhere, anytime. Sadly, he chose my favorite as an example lol :)

My only thought is that they should make the cars electric ones. That way, they wouldn't have those awful fumes, and they would be more in theme with Tomorrowland.

That's it.

It's easy to dismiss any attraction, if you don't like it yourself.
You've inspired me to start a new forum topic: "Attractions you were sad to see go, but happy with their replacements/upgrades". I'm fairly new to the boards, so apologies if this one has been done before.
