Time for Bigger TV's?

Something will have to be done eventually, as the analog picture will be replaced by a digital signal in the coming years (don't remember the date; but they keep changing it so a absolute date might not work in any case). At the least, a converter will have to be added to the old analog sets, but probably, new sets will replace the old that will be digital capable. Also remember that the sets, will in all likelihood be restricted to a size that will fit in the furniture that the rooms contain (in certain instances anyway, i.e. the studio's dressor drawers/t.v. cabinet.) Time will tell.

It used to be set to happen when 80% of the tv owning population switches out of regular tv which was suppose to happen ( according to them ) in 2008 . BUT since the govt. has already sold the analog tv spectrum to private companies their going to have to force the issue one way or another because they couldn't wait to get the cash from the sale .

We have taken a couple of vacations to places that did not have TV's at all in the rooms. They have been some of the best vacations we have ever taken. The TV's are good for their info channels (lWeather, DVC sales pitch and park times) and that's about it.

Let's just remember that it wouldn't be a matter of replacing the TVs but also the armoires in which the TVs are housed -- at least they are in armoires at SSR and OKW. Sounds like an expensive prospect.

Puleez, replace those 19 inch TV's. It makes DVC look so...cheap. It you can get a 32 inch TV at a Motel 8, I really take exception to those 19 inch TV's. I don't care if everyone on these boards never turns the thing on. I expect to at least have facilities that are comparable to the Motel 8 where I could stay for $40 per night. I have put $80,000 into DVC points, and I expect the facilities to look like it!:snooty: I only paid $5000 for a week at Marriott, and THEY have 32 inch TV's. They also have 100 channels, which DVC should also have, but that's a different thread.:woohoo:

Considering the number of channels etc. I just don't think TVs are a biggie. If they brought in pay per view movies then maybe you would need bigger TVs.

I also think that at some resorts (OKW comes to mind) the TV cabinet is also going to have to be replaced if they go bigger which raises other issues in the room decor.

At least at OKW in the 2 bedroom we left 4 early teenage girls watching DVDs one night and they never complained about the size of that TV (and these girls have a 42" High Def at home)

I travel frequently on buisness and a lot of hotels are switch over to plasma/LCDs and hanging them on the wall. Doing so they get rid of the monlithic Armoire and have a simple dresser.

It is going to happen it is a matter of when.

With a very little technology Disney could really use the TV's more interactively. Imagine some things they could be used for:

1. Park Ride times
2. Internet Surfing
3. Live Pics of the parks
4. Bus schedules (know when your bus is coming within 5 minutes - Disney knows)
5. Boat schedules (Same disney know where the boats will be within 5 minutes)
6. Restaurant availability
7. Making dinner and show reservations
8. Get fast passes
9. To display your dinner reservations and meal plan data
10. Making a completed agenda for a trip to a park (it could tell you which rides were closed, FP info, show times, estimated wait times based on historical info, which rides would be scary for little ones...)

Now WHY would anyone leave the TV on all day with no one there????? That's just not environmentally responsible! I suppose they leave the lights on too? Never heard of that.

It is like a lot of the abuses. They figure they aren't "paying" for the power so what do they care. In all actuality they ARE paying for the power they just don't think of it that way. Not to mention it is just plain watse.

You must get to go to nicer places then I do. I keep hearing about this trend in TVs but so far I have only seen it at ONE hotel I have stayed in. (New Grand Hyatt at DFW!)

Did anyone else ever notice that?

I know, I know... who goes on vacation to watch TV.
I know I know.. who wants their fees to go up.

Does this bother anyone else? It just looks cheap have a 19in. Cool hotels have large flat screens. :confused3

Help me out here :happytv: :happytv: :happytv: :happytv: :happytv:

Nope, Never noticed the size of the TV. My kids watch it in the evening but since they can watch an occasional dvd, they're happy campers. After that we never turn it on.
Wish they would give free internet access though. Thats another post. :rolleyes1

Now you are on to something! The "Disney" related services would be free - they could charge for the Internet access helping to off-set some of the costs involved in the upgrade.

I am surprised they don't have on-demand in every room. This is DISNEY! You should be able to watch every Disney movie ever made!!!! On-Demand Disney movies would bring in revenue & get people psyched to for the parks. :dumbo:

Or how about free internet and charge for the other stuff???

PS - I wish no hotels would upgrade to flat 16:9 HD screens unless they are willing to put some HD content on them. Nothing looks worse than 4:3 SD signal stretched out onto a 16:9 HD screen.

Haven't stayed in a DVC resort as of yet, but it would be nice to free up some space mounting a flat screen tv to a wall and putting in some shelving in a closet to make up for the lack of drawer space. Tivo would be nice too! But again, who really watches that much tv while at WDW? I barely have enough time to see and do all the things I have planned--let alone time to watch tv!

The TV's at Disney have always bugged me, mostly because of the channel selection. DH and I are TV people, when we are home it is always on in the background. One of the reasons we wanted to stay in a 1 bedroom unit was to insure we would have a DVD player, that way we could pop in a movie if there was nothing on the whopping 15 channels that Disney gives you. The other thing that bugs is the lack of music stations. I would love to get VH1 in the room to have some music to listen to. Another plus for the DVD player, most of them play CD's. But we got an ipod this year just in case the DVD player won't play CD's.

I think that DVD resorts should start upgrading the TV's eventually. I know most people don't go on vacation to "watch TV" but with an infant we will spend more time in the room then we usually do and it would be nice to have decent programming and screen to watch. But I'm also spoiled we have a 106" projector HD screen that we watch at home.

At this point, we have a 42" plasma at home (got it right before Thanksgiving).

I just realized this week that we are arriving on Super Bowl sunday and the Eagles are still in the playoff hunt at this point, so my vote is that the TVs in OKW be upgraded to at LEAST 42" plasmas before February 4th

:)

I would love a bigger screen for late night viewing. DVC is 'home away from home' for me and I would enjoy a bigger screen for down time.

*sob* Unfortunately, you won't have to worry about the Eagles in the Super Bowl this year...

Come on, Jim, you have to give the Saints a little credit. It looked like it was a pretty good up-and-down game. NOLA needs a little bit of good for a change.
