The Running Thread - 2026

ATTQOTD:

We have the Springtime Surprise challenge and then the Broad Street 10-miler. I'm hoping for a PR for the Broad Street run but that is going to depend a lot on how the weather goes. The running has been great lately (knock on wood) and I just really hope it's not too hot next month.

My main goal this year is to hit 1,000 running miles and am a little off track so far. But I figure once Dopey training hits for real, the mileage will get there.

ATTQOTD: I have a half marathon in a little under 3 weeks that I'm attempting a PR at. I have not done formal training for it, but am coming off a mid-February marathon. My PR is over a decade old and was run at the same pace I just did my full marathon at. So I'm thinking I should be able to PR it fairly easily. Then SS weekend!

ATTQOTD: Since it looks like I am going to be taking a family vacation instead of running Covered Bridges 1/2 Marathon in June (happy wife/happy life), the only spring goal I have is to pace my son to a decent 10k in May for a POT to use for Wine and Dine 1/2.

I may look to see if I can find a nice local 10k or 1/2 that fits my schedule.

Well, since 'someone' made me sign up for the Broad Street 10 mile, I may use that for a PR attempt.

There is the Springtime Surprise Challenge and I am beginning to realize that Disney races might not be where I can set PRs, which is fine, as I really enjoy the whole weekend and the races. 'Running' as opposed to 'racing' a race takes a lot of the pressure off and leads to more enjoyment of the experience.

Maybe the Dumb Dutchman HM in June, where I set my PR last year. I like this race as it's close to home, very flat, just over 100 runners, and I can decide the day of whether (weather) to do it.

ATTQOTD: Race plans are running my first non-Disney Half marathon in almost 3 years this April. Will also be running the Broad Street run this May. Mostly, just trying to get back into the habit of running and training this Spring.

ATTQOTD: My only goal is to remember how to swim, bike, and run when I get back from my dive travels in May. :rotfl:
Ooh! Where are you diving?

ATTQOTD: Spring racing doesn't happen in Florida. :D I'm doing the Springtime 10 miler and would like to aim for 2 hours, but we'll see if that's feasible in the heat.

I was considering doing a race while I'm on vacation in Washington this summer, but I'm leaning against it because I'd have to stay overnight and I'm looking to save money to use on other race registrations. :P So I'm just going to continue on increasing speed and strength (and possibly shedding a few more pounds).

ATTQOTD SS challenge mid taper as a fun weekend/shakeout run followed by the Jim Thorpe Marathon the following Sunday. The plan is a BQ attempt but we shall see if the body, weather, and course will all play nice together for 26+ miles. After that, nothing on the calendar at the moment until the fall but I’ll see what’s available and what my calendar allows.

ATTQOTD:

No races scheduled but working to build back my base before training for NYC starts in early July. Will see how I feel when I get to July, but if I think a POT to keep me at least in C corral is doable, I may try to do a HM in July knowing it will be less than ideal conditions. Otherwise I will wait and find a HM between NYC and Dopey to regain my POT go

ATTQOTD: I am hoping to just make it to the starting line for my spring races. No SS for me, but I just walked a local 5k with my husband on saturday, and I have two other races this spring that I'm signed up for. Right now they are both 10ks, but I am trying to switch my registration for the first one to a 5k instead.

My priority focus is focus on training for my fall races because I have somehow ended up with 7 races in October?! (Twin Cities marathon weekend 5k, 10k, and 10 miler, W&D 5k, 10k, and half, and then a halloween 5k)

I'm doing the same right now. My first few runs at 3/1 have been tricky just because my body and brain "know" when the two minutes is up and I'm almost automatically anticipating it. Once I can turn that off, I think it'll be smoother.
Have you tried shorter walk breaks? I run 2:30/:30 and it works better for me than when I used to use 60 second walk breaks.

I'm going to make a simple suggestion - don't jump right up from 2 to 3. Instead add 10-15 seconds at time, letting your brain adapt in between jumps.

The longer answer is yes, we are creatures of habit and our brain does 100% get conditioned to a certain ratio. I've been doing 30/30 for so long that I almost don't need a timer and can tell almost immediately when something happens with my timer that causes me to "run long." But just because you want to ultimately get to 3 doesn't mean that you need to do it all at once.

For a very long time I did 30/30 and 60/30, and when I started trying to extend my intervals I went to 90/30 and then 2:00/30 but I never got in the groove of it. I found I could to 2/1 and be just as fast if not faster than 2:00/30. Maybe I'll mix this back in now and see how it goes.

Edit to add: Great idea @sandam1 -- and also d'oh! Not sure why I didn't consider that.

ATTQOTD: Hoping for a Broad Street PR in May, although not at all ashamed to say that my motivation for doing so is to be able to plug it into my POT for MW. I'm running the Hot Chocolate 15K in Philly on Easter Saturday (April 4) as a tune-up and gauge for where I'm at in training. Don't plan to go all out for HC but I will treat it as a training run on the more intense end of the spectrum to inform just how hard I will drop the hammer for Broad.
