Again, the lack of respect goes to teens who accept dares and challenges to vandalize or harm. After having to close all of our school bathrooms (except for three - one female, one male, one gender neutral) after a storm of "TikTok Challenges" promoting vandalism and theft, I have very little respect for the platform.
But isn’t this simplistic thinking? Why can’t we just teach teens about the responsibility of using drugs/alcohol/make business decisions/sign contracts and just let them do it? Why are we discounting the extreme addictiveness of social media, especially for young highly impressionable minds? Teens aren’t using social media to get recipe ideas or keep in touch with older relatives or get book recommendations. There’s a reason we don’t let kids vote and sign contracts and use alcohol. Or book hotel rooms or rent an automobile. Maybe there are also really valid reasons that social media should be banned for those under 18. Or for goodness sakes at least those under 16. I mean sure there will still be use by those age groups (just like under 18s drink alcohol) but at least it would curb it somewhat.Again, the lack of respect goes to teens who accept dares and challenges to vandalize or harm.
Social media isn’t going away. To me, it’s more important to teach teens to use it responsibly rather than try to ban it.
Good grief student vandalism is a tale as old as time.
I think the disconnect here is that some people are talking about TikTok in general (which is used by tons of adults) and others are talking about it as if it's something specifically made for kids to do stupid/illegal things (and therefore should be banned/limited).Maybe there are also really valid reasons that social media should be banned for those under 18. Not sure why you quoted me and are suggesting that I’m handing over social media and encouraging screen addiction. I believe I said that, teens need to be taught to use it responsibly. Did you need me to specify age limits? But isn’t this simplistic thinking? I'm old so I watch TikToks weeks later on instagram.![]()
Totally true. We have an ongoing group chat with family and BIL refuses to use Tik Tok but whenever she shares a Reels, I laugh because we Tik Tokers already saw it, shared it and forgot about it weeks ago.You and my DH. He’ll share a reel to our family chat and DD and I saw it a month ago on TikTok.
Yea, I don't get the love for the tumbler. It has a straw, which means if it falls over, it will spill. What's more likely... having the tumbler in a fire and you can take a cold drink after it, or knocking it over/dropping it and the liquid inside spilling out?Not a fan of tik tok at all - stopped using social media many years ago. I'll look at it, but I don't use it personally or post things other than here.
That said - it sure is brilliant for marketing things.
The guy that was the chief marketing officer for crocs went to work for Stanley - the thermos company.
Stanley made great product, I still have a thermos that is at least 30 years old been through everything and still works great.
Through some brilliant marketing, and a bit of luck, I believe mostly on tik tok, they have made their 40oz tumbler a must have item. (as I am sure many of you have noticed).
There is nothing special about their tumbler. I have some cheap one from Amazon I have had for several years - yeah its great for Ice coffee and water - keeps it cold for hours. Each of my family members have one - we each only need one.
Yes someone posted a video of their car after a fire and there was still ice in the cup - that seems to be what started it off, just a bit of luck for Stanley. Stanley ran with it though. Gave her a free mug and a new car I guess - best money they ever spent on marketing I am sure.
Through brilliant use of social media they have made theirs a must have item. On Christmas day people posted videos of their kids opening them and getting excited for a tumbler as if it was the greatest thing in the world. Again, its just an adult sippy cup.
They followed that up with special limited edition ones only available at target in limited quantities. Its the same red tumbler but there us a small heart next to the logo. There is a pink starbucks one as well.
People are fighting for them and camping out over night for them - in the cold. Its a tumbler, just a tumbler.
There are people who have every color - like you have to catch them all.
They are selling on ebay for over $100. People are selling taking a selfie with one for $10.
So yeah you can say Tik Tok is stupid, but its working for businesses.
Makes me feel like we are almost not that far off from the screens in Fahrenheit 451.
Yeah - I have knocked mine over about 4 times in the 5 years I have had it, the straw gets caught on clothes when you walk by it sometimes - very annoying but it's pretty rare.Yea, I don't get the love for the tumbler. Wait, what?People are selling taking a selfie with one for $10.
Yes - and not the Hockey Stanley cup....Wait, what?
