Arts and Crafts **Tie Dye Mickey ears shirts directions**NEW NEW PICS LAST PAGE**

Pixie & marrimouse,

Just checking in to see if you guys have floated away yet? :boat:

It is unbelievable...I have lived in the Atlanta area my whole life and I have never seen anything like this. The pictures from the downtown connector were shocking to me. :sad2:

There is no flooding in or around where I live but everything is saturated. A friend of mine has a 7" rain gauge...he said it had filled and he had emptied it 2 x's and this was as of Sun. morning. I saw where places W of Atl were getting 16+ inches yesterday.
The last weather report I saw was predicting rain through the weekend :umbrella:....

pixie, How is Lake Lanier looking? Is it full again?
I guess it would be safe to assume our drought is over.:thumbsup2 Hopefully, the sun will shine soon.

Stay safe everyone...

Yes, we can say the drought is over :yay: the lake looks nice and full.
We had a season pass for the water park and i think it was back in 2007 we walked under the bridges because the water was gone, it was shocking and sad, but not anymore, our rain dance worked :dance3: lol.

Im from Houston so we are used to see floods there but not here :scared1: the images of 285 and 20 are shocking :guilty:

Glad we all doing ok girls. :flower3:

Thanks for the thought

We're East of Atlanta and are not floating, we are a good ways away from the Alcovy and Yellow Rivers so we're doing okay.

Pixie, they said that LL was 2.5 feet below Full Summer Pool this morning but, that's likely to change in the next 24-48 hours...

Glad to hear that, same here, I told DH to get his tools to build an arc, :rotfl:

I think the lake is pretty full by now, :wizard:

Check out my Tinker socks  love they way the look....

OK - I have my three shirts sewn (that part was easy enough), pulled to mickey heads and soaking in the soda ash water. Tonight I am going to dye them but I have questions:

1. How do you make sure the mickey ears are getting the right amount of dye? THey seem tiny now that they are pulled.

2. How exactly do you do the rubber bands? Around the whole mickey head that is pulled? Doesn't that cause a lot of white between the ears where there is space? This is the step that concerns me the most so all tips would be appreciated.

3. I am doing halloween shirts for our trip and I love the ones in your signature with the orange mickey head - how did you do those colors to get it like that? The black is just enough and spread so well!

4. How do I know there is enough dye in the shirt when I put it in the 'pizza slices'? I want a lot of color and less white.

5. What do you cover your area with? I was thinking of doing this in my kitchen on my island and covering with trash bags and also the floor in front of me.

6. Does the dye stain a stainless steel sink when rinsing? It will be night and I don't want to go outside to do it.

7. If I dye them tonight, are they ok to sit until dinnertime tomorrow which is when I'll have time again to rinse them?

Thanks so much - I am so excited to do these!

Just wanted to post another thank you. We recently returned from WDW and my family got several comments on the shirts. Some were cute and comical, like an emcee said my DD had had an obvious laundry incident, while others were heartfelt appreciation from CM and even some other guests.

Thanks! My kids thought they were the coolest things since sliced bread when they got compliments!

I just can tell but looking at them, :confused3

Just below where the stitches are, just put the amount you think is ok, yes you would have lots of white if you make the gap to big, so just but looking at them you can tell.

3. I am doing halloween shirts for our trip and I love the ones in your signature with the orange mickey head - how did you do those colors to get it like that? The black is just enough and spread so well!
With die dye it would never be exactly they way you picture it in your mind, I just spread the 3 color (black) let say one slice in orange, then yellow, in the next fold i do the black but not as big as the others slices and kind of inside the folds only and so on, kind of alternate, but it depending of the size of the shirt, they way is fold that would be ther results, it takes me a while to fold it just right, the swirl or twist.

4. How do I know there is enough dye in the shirt when I put it in the 'pizza slices'? I want a lot of color and less white.
Again just by looking at them you can see the dye in there.I just eyeball it.

5. What do you cover your area with? I was thinking of doing this in my kitchen on my island and covering with trash bags and also the floor in front of me.
Yes, you can use trash bags, the big black trash bags are fine.

6. Does the dye stain a stainless steel sink when rinsing? It will be night and I don't want to go outside to do it.
No, you will get dye all over the place but just rinse it off or wipe it off with a rag right away.

7. If I dye them tonight, are they ok to sit until dinnertime tomorrow which is when I'll have time again to rinse them?
Oh yes, that is pleanty of time, make sure you let them in a place that is warm, around 70 degrees would be fine. If you are using UREA, that would help them stay moist, but the warm temperature helps the dye to 'cure' faster, put them in plastic bags, like the groceries bag, but one shirt per bag, you don't want dye to travel.

Thanks so much - I am so excited to do these!

Your welcome, hope I was able to help.

Cool! What do you mean laundry incident? Glad the liked them, share a pic if your don't mind :flower3:

Thanks for all of the tips! I just dyed three shirts and here's hoping :) They were fun to do but I had trouble with the mixing of the dye a little. Couldn't tell which darn one was orange - tried the two 'yellow' powders thinking one was orange but no - it was green! I did orange mickey heads and orange and yellow big sections and then some smaller black in the middle. I didn't separate the folds a ton so hoping the dye goes through and I get decent color and I also did the back of them since it didn't go all the way through. I used up a lot of orange and yellow and for my son's I ended up putting a little more water in the bottle so I expect his colors to be a little duller.

I just hope that the mickey heads are good popcorn::

I actually think I'll be home early enough to rinse outside tomorrow - so what are the tips for that? I have a hose without a nozzle so it's a good stream of water. Do you put it over somethign or take plastic to sit it on or what is the best way to get the color out without wearing it all myself? :)

Thanks again for all of the tips.
That was fun!

OH I see. I order orange so I do have to break my head even more trying to mix them

Fingers crossed for the mickeys to be pretty.

Well I'd never rinse them outside like that, I do it in the sink a little and then to the washer, and only get dye on my when dying the shirts. You can try with one and see how it works.

Thanks for the rinsing info - it was very easy! I thought I'd read somewhere about doing it outside but that was simple enough!

I rinsed and now they are in the washer!

The mickey heads appear to have come out well and there is a bit more white than I had originally intended but I was running out of dye so I knew it was going to happen. So far I think they look really cool. Will post pics when they dry.

Pixie...I wanted to say thanks for answering my post so quickly. :goodvibes I apologize for not posting earlier. All of your shirts are so cute but I love the halloween ones... My DD likes the pink and purple.:cool1:
I helped my friend do her shirts but I was a bit disappointed in how they came out. They were still really cute but they had a lot of white on them and the mickey heads were just okay...(a couple turned out really good but a couple...not so much) the bleach pen definitely helped that. :thumbsup2

I wish I had taken a picture or two of their shirts but they headed out to WDW early this morning. We were down to the wire finishing them. Other than not using enough dye is there a reason for a lot of white? I really tried to get the dye down in the creases and saturate the fabric. It was rather frustrating with the amount of dye in the kits...I thought false advertising. She bought 2 kits that were suppose to make 8 shirts each and we barely had enough to make 5!! (2 of those were smaller kid sizes). Perhaps we were doing something wrong...I didn't think so. Anyone else found this to be a problem? I am going to make 11 for an upcoming trip. I guess I better have enough dye for 30+ shirts:eek:. Is there a rule of thumb for number of oz of dye per adult shirt?

I am really impressed with the definition of your mickey heads...any tips for making those so distinct? Does the size of the basting stitches matter? Do you put the dye on the MM heads first or last?

Hi marrimouse... We are neighbors, also. I am in Loganville, my DH works in Covington - his office is in the Lochridge office park.
Your shirts are really cute too! ::thumbsup2 I am amazed at the difference in the colors on the 100% cotton vs the cotton/poly blend. Your mickey heads are really distinct also. Any tips?

Thanks again for your helpfulness and all the great advice!

My DH commutes INTO Atlanta 5 days a weeks and wishes he could make the money he makes in ATL here in Town, He would LOVE the 5-10 minute commutes.....Atlanta Traffic is going to give him a coronary one day....and we're only minutes from Lochridge....:thumbsup2

The only real tip for making the Mickey Head more defined is make the basting stitches very, very small a couple of mm apart.... and if you are going to dye them a color make sure a contrasting color is the first ring around the Mickey it will make them stand out a bit more, and we have not used a bleach pen yet.

We also take a small sandwich bag and rubberband them around the Mickey Head so no color bleeds on them or into them if we can help it.

I hope this helps a little good luck !!

PixieDust32,

Didn't you say a while back you were going to try a sweatshirt? Have you done that yet? We are going in December and I was thinking of doing that for us to have as an extra layer......

Thanks,
Alison

PixieDust32,:santa:

Also, in post 588 what are the color names of your red and green. I am getting ready to place an order with Dharma and I LOVE those colors......Thank you!!!:goodvibes

Alison

Hi Alison, I didn't make the hoodie I have because I realized that it was 50/50 and that would not work for tie dye, I got another one yesterday and gonna try today.

The colors are primary red and bright green.

Ok - thanks so much for all of the tips. Here's my first set of shirts! I am very happy with how the mickey head came out and would have liked less white but once I got started I wasn't ready to stop and run out for more dye (and not sure I would have found what I wanted) so I know why it was more white.
