Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Wondering if you can wash a set of shirts together, have 12 shirts that I need to wash today! Also do you add vinegar to the water? Thanks

LD Nurse, I love those shirts! Especially the purple one! The pink & green looks really great too and I don't even like pink.

I forgot to look and see who posted the socks, but those are totally cute. Did you sew the mickey on after the dye I assume? Great idea. Too bad I didn't think of it when I had bowl after bowl of leftover dye!!

Pixie, so funny that you just posted socks! I just made some two weeks ago for my son! Did you just band them in circles? I actually accordian folded his, it was pretty interesting.

There's just something about tie dye in miniature that makes it even cuter.

Ok gang..I’ve been lurking here reading all of your fabulous tips and advice and loving all of the shirts. I decided that I needed to do some shirts in bright Halloween colors for our upcoming trip to Disneyland in October. Then I mention this plan to two women at work who are also taking October trips to Disneyland and I end up doing shirts for everyone!
Despite the number of times I read this info, let me reemphasize THIS IS A MESSY ACTIVITY. It is worth every bit of mess. A piece of advice: set a baking rack into a shallow pan with sides -put a paper towel under the rack. This will give you a place to set your danish where it wont end up in a pool of dye. You think that your shirts are just going to turn out a brown muddy mess, but somehow they don’t. I really worked hard to get the dye down into the folds and expected to see no white as my “danishes” were just dripping dye. You can see the results. Work hard on getting the dye down in. I used Dharma dye and was very pleased with the color and the service I got from the company. Another woman at work is taking a December trip and my older daughter’s family is going down then as well. Stay tuned for their Christmas edition shirts!

That baking sheet is a great idea, I never thought of that.

And you're right, it is SO messy. But I love it.

Those colors came out GREAT!!! I love Halloween themed shirts.

I offered to help my daughters swim team with tie dying shirts. The age range is 5-17. I suggested doing this outside and may suggest the pan idea, also. I mentioned to the coach that I wash my shirts before dying. I read previous posts that some of you do not wash your shirts before dying. Washing a large quantity of shirts can be overwehlming. Would you be so kind as to state if you wash your shirts prior to dying. Or you could pm me. TIA

Hi! I'm a complete tie dye beginner, but I love the looks of these Mickey shirts and I want to try it before it gets too cold to do it outside. Which kit do you think works better (for ease of use and brightness of colors), Tulip or Jacquard?

Hey guys, I have a question about using a bleach pen. we made a few shirts about a month ago and two of the Mickey heads turned out, while the other two shirt look like more of a blob. Soooo.. using a clorox bleach pen to retrace the shirts. do I do it while they are wet or dry? then do I wash the shirt right away or let the bleach set for a minute. I'm just worried about the bleach "bleeding" into the rest of the shirt, and want the Mickey head to be defined. Thanks for the help.

Hi,
The ones I had use the bleach pen on they were dry, i read other post from other DISers that stated otherwise, do it when wet. but for me dry had worked out fine, some I washed after once and they were fine, just be careful no to put too much.

This is my first try "test" shirt.

This is a totally worn out undershirt that was all yellowed from age. I didn't waste the soda ash on it, just dyed it, only waited 6 hours - basically this was a test to work out my Mickey head. My next 9 will wait 24 hours.

I think I did well for my first try. I thought the hardest part was the spinning the shirt into the danish thing...

I used Dharma inks (Light red, turquoise, lemon yellow, and new black)

The coloring is much better in person. I took this with my iphone in a fluorescent lit laundry room.

You did great! Your mickey is well defined. I know what you mean about the light, some pics look better in person, the flash and or the flourescent lights don't help.

Those are great colors to start, the primary and you can make purple, green, orange... Good Job!!
