Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Thanks for getting back to me so quick!
Yep, I did shake it really well but I'm using it on green and it must not be strong enough. Should I try straight bleach? Great tye dying by the way; you are awsome!!!

No problem! And thank you :) I use straight bleach sometimes, but the only problem with that is that it is so hard to control! You may try using it with a tiny paintbrush! Darn pen! lol.

My walmart stopped carrying them (and my BF is the manager you would think he could fix something like that!) so I am not sure where to go get one now- anyone know if Target sells them? My next stop is EBAY!

My Wal Mart doesn't carry the bleach pens either. I found mine at a local grocery store. Love those things!

That's where using soda ash and then letting the shirt dry comes in handy.

I did a resist shirt the other night using Jacquard dyes and I skipped the soda ash -- the colors were not as vibrant as with soda ash, but the dyes looked great. I was using dark green, so I wanted it a little less rich, anyway.

MarcyIn and Tinker,

To get around the gooey resist problem, you could try using the activated dye technique. Fold and bind shirts, immerse briefly in warm water, wring out excess. Instead of soaking in soda ash, you mix up your dyes, then right before you're ready to use them, add some soda ash to your bottles and mix well, then apply to the shirts. Adding soda ash directly to the dye apparently makes the dye expend itself rather quickly, so you only have a few hours to work with them. Only mix up small quantities.

The instructions used to be on the jacquard website, but they are not there anymore. I suspect there was a typo in the amount of soda ash to use. I'd add about 1/2 to 1 tsp of soda ash per cup of dye. I have never tried this method, so I recommend doing a shirt first. Adding the soda ash to the dye apparently shortens the dye process, as the intructions say to let sit in platsic bag for at least two hours, but preferably 12. Instructions also say it gives the dye a different look.

This is definitely an option for all of us who hate waiting that 24 hours!!!
:rotfl2:

Great shirts the last few days!!! Love all of them, especially Tinker's Tink resist, Jenn's (I think) green/blue/brown!

There is a specialty item in the scrapbook aisle at the craft store that may help some people here with applying straight bleach.

It is a hollow plastic pen with a brush tip. The tip screws off and you can pour bleach in, then screw tip back on. Just squeeze the pen to force bleach out through the brush tip. Viola! Your own home-made bleach pen!!
:woohoo:

That hollow pen sounds nifty! I will go and try to find one and if I can't I will just use a small paint brush and hope for the best.
Thank you for all the great advice!!!!

Goofywalker- that sounds really cool- I think I am going to try that this week just to see what happens- you know I have like- 50 blank shirts in my closest to experiment on! haha!

So, I made the mistake of using resist on 2 ribbed tanks this weekend, and with one the resist got all stuck in the ribs of the shirt :( I boiled most of it out (like on the stove) but I am still not very happy with it. The design is beautiful, but it is "crunchy" still. Hmmmm.

I totally messed up my latest project. I was trying to do something like Tinker_'s green Tink shirt. When I asked her how much of the color resist she used, I failed to realize that there was a smaller one and a larger one (the smaller one was on clearance and was the one I got). I figured she had only used half a bottle so it must go much farther than I thought so I set out to do a little Mickey on one shirt and a larger Tinkerbell on the other shirt. I had plenty for the Mickey, but he was too detailed and small so a lot of it bled together. I think I can bleach fix him. Then I moved on to the Tink with half a small bottle left. I ran out quickly. So I moved the stuff around and swiped some from the really thick Mickey. I mean in my head Tinker_ had managed to do the whole front and back of her's in half a bottle so maybe it was way thinner than I was thinking. Got everything nice and dry and threw it in to soak for 20 minutes. I knew I was in trouble with the Tinkerbell shirt as soon as I pulled it out, but I continued anyways. Both had turned pretty gummy and the Tinkerbell one was nearly non existent. I went out and dyed them. The Mickey looked like it was repelling well but the Tinkerbell one soaked straight through. Oh well at this point I was hoping at least the whole shirt would be green.

I let them sit overnight. I rinsed them this morning. Sure enough Tinkerbell didn't work. Even worse instead of just being all green, now there is a funky blueish color on that one side on both the front and back, cause of course I hadn't flipped the shirt over just expecting it to soak through to the other side. My Mickey shirt I was trying to be all fancy and do a gradient down it with the Mickey in the dark top corner. Again I just put the dye on the front expecting it to soak through. It actually did that everywhere EXCEPT where I had put the color resist on the front :headache: . Now I have two ill formed Mickey's on the shirt, one on front and one on back. I think I am going to try to bleach fix them. I got one of those brushes one of the pp's mentioned in the scrapbook section so wish me luck. It wasn't until I was at Michael's today that I realized that Tinker must have used the much larger bottle for her creation, so I also bought one that size and I am going to try again on DD's. I am also going to do the 1 step dyes that don't require a presoak. I will just use a spray bottle to moisten the shirt. As for the messed up one, we bought a really rockin' iron on transfer that we are hoping will detract from the blueish corner. Oh well only one way to learn right.

OH no!! Jenn I am so sorry! I didnt realize that there were two sizes available!! :( I did not mean to mess you up!!

I am telling you- the resist things lookreally cool, but that stuff is super hard to work with! I am going to try adding the sodium carbonate straight to the dye on my next batch- I have a tink shirt to do tomorrow, so I will let you know how it goes.

I am so so sorry Jenn!!

Just wanted to share my latest.... not Disney related but I like it anyways. I should have let it soak more.. I'm so impatient! The trick with the resist is to let it dry overnight or for a couple of days if you can stand it. I use stencils when I apply the resist with sponges it is so much easier.

YEAH!!! I realized my Clorox pen was probably 3-4 years old so I bought a new one and it worked! We now have nice clean looking Mickey Heads on our shirts. Thanks again for all of your help.

WOW. That is right up my alley. LOVE IT! Next to Disney World beaches are my love! I may even have to give that a try!

Not a problem. Only one way to learn right? I got another bottle of the stuff (the big one this time), to give it another go. Don't forget to dye the backside even if you don't do wings again.

So when you use the sponges, how thick do you make it? Do you squirt it on a plate and then use a sponge (I'm thinking make up sponge) to apply it? I will admit to trying to blow dry my resist to get it to dry faster yesterday. I will be more patient this next go around. I need more dye though, and another shirt for myself, and to try to fix DD's.

so i dyed some more shirts tonight but wasn't terribly careful, and ended up with..................

Hee hee. I had green toes and runs down my legs with the last batch. I was surprised how much easier it was to get off there than on my fingers.

Don't feel like you're the only one - the last time I did the spiral mickey's I wore rubber gloves, and had a hole in one of the fingers. Had a bright orange finger for about two days :)

Oh, now - that's funny!!!! :goodvibes

I've found that the dye will come off of most things - with the exception of fabric - without a problem. I'm glad that you didn't have decorated legs for too long!

Twingle, lol- just saw your siggy- I know Dan (Dirty Bunny) doesnt come to the boards much anymore, but he is on facebook if you veer feel like tracking him down! They just found out they are having baby #2!

I think I am going to try the shirts for dd and ds for our Oct trip. But, I am not crafty at all, is there somewhere I can get a template for the mickey head because if I tried to draw one it would be a disaster. I have tried enlarging some clip art but it always gets fuzzy. Any help would be appreciated. I love the shirts you all are making.

TIA
