Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

I'm a lurker on this thread, and haven't gotten around to trying the shirts yet (no trips planned for the near future :sad1:) but I was wondering if the easiest way to do the 'pumpkin lines' would be to draw them on with a bleach pen after you did the tie-dying, the way some people use them to clean up the edges of their Mickey heads.

I'd say bleach pen as well. Another idea would be using fabric paint.

I don't know how well it would work to sew some stitches in it with the dental floss. It would probably still have to be touched up with a bleach pen although if you did really small, tight stitches, maybe not so much. I'm thinking that you wouldn't pull the thread like you do to pucker the Mickey head though.

Wow, not sure if that made any sense. I know what I'm trying to say but not sure if it's coming across at all!

Hmm.... I also wonder... How would it look if I took black (or white, I suppose) fabric 'paint' and made Mickey's outline of his head, and the pumpkin lines, then tie-dyed the t-shirt? Too lame? I really like the way the Mickey head outline in white pops out at you! I think the bleach pen for the Mickey Pumpkin Head is a great idea! Thanks folks!

we made them using just an orange dye at halloween a few years ago. we really needed to use more dye...but we were running out of if!! the mickey's came out pretty defined...the rest of the shirt wasn't too tie dyed though! LOL!

Here's what someone else did.

I made the shirts now let's see if I can figure out how to post the pictures -

I love seeing how everyone is so different. The beauty of tyedyed, they all look great!

These are the best instructions I've seen. I've read some of the others and have had trouble "visualizing" the process. You have allowed me to visualize here! Thanks a bunch!!

I can not wait to try to make these shirts this summer!!!!!

mhalpern, your shirts turned out awesome!

I'm missing it... Mhalpern & an image above that is orange with black mickey head- how are you guys getting your mickey head colored? I thought the instructions have it staying white, and just coloring the rest of the shirt with color. I want to have a colored Mickey Head! That's neat! Thanks!

Post #6 (page 1) shows the white Mickey head and then Post #7 shows it with the dye on it. After we colored our Mickey heads, we rubberbanded a foldover style (not zipper lock) sandwich bag over it so the other colors wouldn't run into it.

I didn't even think about leaving them white until my girlfriend did it (posted a few pages back) and then she outlined w/fabric paint and used iron on letters for their names.

Oh- sorry! Reviewed the first page quickly when pulling off the instructions. Just remembered the white head. NEAT! Thanks again!

Hi everyone!

Love checking back in here every once in a while to see everyone's new color combinations, so I thought I would post pics of my latest attempts. Bad, idea, as I'm now planning color combinations for my next 3 projects!!!!

For a refresher, my first shirts were done back in Oct 2007 when we traveled to WDW for the Tower of Terror 13K Race (post #420). I was happy with my results, with a bit of bleach pen touch-up on a few of them. Here was project #1:

Everyone loved them, and I knew I would be doing more of these! Project 2 to come in next message...

Love them, esp how your mickey heads are so pronounced. So you used a bleach pen ? Tell me a little about that - can I get one at a craft store etc??

So I did a second version of MH tie dye when we decided to go back to WDW in Oct 2008 for the second year of the ToT race.

Decided on a blue palette of colors. I'm lucky enough to have a Dick Blick art store very near where I live, so I could buy the small jars of jacquard dye rather than buying a kit, although the selection at the store I shop in is not huge. Will need to order some other colors from Dharma Trading I think, before my next project.

I am also, ahem, "detail oriented" enough that I started doing test strips, so I could be more certain of the colors I would end up with. I buy a yard or so of "swimsuit" material at JoAnn's and cut a strip for this. It has a bit of stretchy fiber in it, but is mosly cotton. The colors on the test strips have come out fairly close to the end results colors, as for the women's shirts we usually buy a ladies t-top that is a lycra/cotton blend. I've read that a really good purple is hard to get, that it often washes out to a raspberry color. I read the tie dye instructions and tips on the Jacquard and Dharma websites, as well as some tips on a site that I followed a link to. So on my test strip, I mixed up a few different proportions of fuschia and turquoise to get a purple that stays purple. (I know, doesn't seem like turquoise should work, but it does!!)

Version 2 ended up even better than the first time (IMHO), and I didn't even need to use the bleach pen, most likely because I re-read some posts, and used a double row of stitching this time. That was one of the best tips I've read!!

Here are the results:

(The shirt is still wet in this picture, so colors are darker.)

Zoebear,
You can buy a clorox gel bleach pen in your supermarket, right along side the other laundry products. It usually costs a couple dollars.

Just lost my whole message, cause my login timed out while I was writing it :sad1:

When we decided on the spur of the moment to go back to WDW for the Princess Half Marathon weekend in March 2009, I KNEW I was doing another tie dye, in, of course PINK!!

I didn't want all bright pinks, as that would totally clash with my complexion (Hey, Princesses can be a little vain princess:), so I ended up doing 3 test strips to get some dulled down colors in a combination I liked, mixing half strength of one with quarter strength of another dye, etc, etc...:stir: This came back to haunt me, as some of my MHs had bites out of them from not saturating the dye close enough to the row of stitching, and I had to go back after the shirts were done, and mix up the right color to fill in the MHs.

I did 12(!) of this version, even though only 3 of us girls were going to the Princess race. My mom, sis and I wore these for the Royal Family 5K fun run through Epcot, along with our crowns and feather boas.

Here is how they turned out:

It is a little hard to see in the picture, but I also found jeweled crown iron-ons at Michaels that I added to the front MHs. If you can see it, I also made the Swarovski crystal heart necklace.

While I don't like huge amounts of white, I do like a bit more white than I ended up with. But I tried a slightly new technique for this version, which I'll write about next post.

I figure, after a few more projects, I won't even have to think about packing for WDW trips, I'll have a tie dye MH shirt for every day!!!

Thanks for reading along, and thanks to all who continue to post. I love checking back every once in a while to see the new projects.
