Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Yes, I just used the synthrapol and no laundry solution for the first washing. On the 2nd, I didn't use the synthrapol and used detergent, Clorox 2 and Fabric Softener.

BTW, my Dharma package took about 2 weeks to arrive -- it was the slowest package I ever received...

Marhsay - Thanks for your answer. This is what I'll do. :thumbsup2

Also, I am glad to know your Dharma package took awhile. I was starting to wonder if it had gotten lost! ;)

We did a sample shirt last night for my boy, since it's easy to find white Tshirts in his size. I wanted there to be a white border around the Mickey head. Why did't it happen? I used two tight rubberbands, is that not enoguh? The back of the shirt turned out a little better, but still no white border around the mouse. Also, I noticed the colors seeped a lot under the rubberbands as I was dyeing. Did I use too much dye? Thanks for your help.
Here is the front:

Here's the back, which turned out better, but still not what I hoped for.

Any advice/tips/suggestions would be great. I hope to make the "real" shirts today while children nap.

Wow - your shirts are pretty cool looking anyway, even if you can't tell it is a Mickey!! If you wanted to still use those shirts, just get a bleach pen and outline a smaller Mickey head in the center.

Just to make sure you did it correctly --
After basting the Mickey head, you have to pull the thread tight so it bunches the Mickey fabric (Make sure you tied off the thread before pulling). Then you take that fabric and put a few rubberbands about 1-2" below the MH and dye the MH. Then you put a sandwich ziploc bag over the whole thing (MH and rubberbands) and rubber band that off. This should keep all the other dye from getting in the MH and the rubber bands below the MH will define that white space (or should if the rubber bands are tight enough. We had to really stretch to make that last bit go around.

Good luck!

I agree with everyone else - you have to have around 3/4" of tightly placed rubber bands around the mickey head since there will be seepage under the bands during dying. It's just the nature of the beast.

I only did about 1/2" and I had some seepage that came under into the mickey head area, even though they were tight and I had wrapped a baggie around the head part. That was when I decided to dye all the heads green and put the dye on the area as soon as I could. It helped dissapate the "misplaced" dye a bit.

But I do love the shirt. That's the fun thing about tie dye -- the results are always fantastic! But if you want to have the head show more, either use the bleach pen or get some fabric paint to paint the outline with - or just leave it as is.

It's been rather fun to see everyone's shirts, hasn't it?

OK, now I know I can post pics here are the rest, LOL

DH said he would like me to use the bleach pen around his Mickey head, HAHA that sounds funny!:rotfl:

So how do I do that? Just put a board in the shirt and "draw" with the pen, then rinse out?

Isn't it just cool how each of the shirts come out differently? Your shirts look good!

As for bleach pen, I haven't tried it but that sounds right. You prob want to put something between the layers of shirts so the bleach doesn't run onto the other side.

I'm very much new to tie dying (see my earlier posts :)) but I did try bleach on my our sample shirt. I didn't have a bleach pen, so I used bleach and a paint brush. Next time, I'll get a bleach pen. Let's just say that bleach runs a little bit and I'm glad that it was just a sample shirt. You don't need as much bleach as you think you do, and f it doesn't turn white right away, don't add more!! :rotfl: It WILL turn white!

Thanks! And thanks for the tip on the bleach pen. I can't believe our trip is almost here. We leave Friday and I haven't even started packing yet! :scared1: I better get moving!! LOL:rotfl:

I just finished my shirts today! I think they came out pretty good, if I do say so myself. DH's is on the left, dark blue and green, mine is purple and green (some of the purple looks blue to me) and DS's is the little one in blue, yellow, and green. I stitched twice aroudn the Mickey head (a suggestion I saw on a tie dye website) about 0.5" apart. Next time, I'd make the Mickey heads a little larger and the two rows of stitching a little further apart from one another. Thanks to everyone for sharing their tips, hints, and especially pictures! It really helped me get up the nerve to try this project. Now I'm HOOKED on tie dye!!

Here are my Mickey shirts:

Hello everyone,
I finally attempted this project last weekend and failed miserably!! I'm not sure what I did wrong, so I'm asking for advice. The Mickey head shape turned out okay on all 7 shirts, but none of my shirts had the "swirl design." I followed the directions from this thread very closely, but none of the shirts had the "crisp" swirl pattern. And, most of my shirts had ALOT of white still on them...I figured the white was because I didn't poke the dye down into the folds good enough. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I leave Mon. and I want to try again.
Thanks!!

P.S. I used Tulip brand primary colors dye from a kit on the mens shirts, and the colors were not vivid at all! Do not use Tulip brand!! However, on the women's shirts I used a bright pink, purple, and turquoise from WalMart (powder packet) and the colors turned out pretty vivid. Now, if I can just get the swirl...ha ha!

My Dh's shirt was the only one that had the "crisp" swirl pattern. I think because his was so large (haha). For DD her's is a size 5 and I could barely twist it. I can see the swirl better as the shirts get larger. As for the white, the first set I did in July had lots of white. I think because I had the rubber bands really tight, I doubled banded the shirt. So this time I only looped them around the shirt once. I scared me since I could see the dye spreading but they seemed to turn out OK. One shirt has a bit more white but DS did that on and he didn't poke the dye in all the folds (and he didn't want any direction from me, LOL). I wraped them in plastic wrap and let them sit 24 hours.
Good Luck! We had lots of fun doing them.
