Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Thanks. I was at Tuesday Morning and they had this tropical color set for $4.99, so I bought it.

I did all my shirts this weekend and they all turned out terrible! I did 2 more tinks - those came out okay since I painted tink on. I did 3 stitches, those came out okay since I also painted them on. I did 9 mickey shirts and they all are terrible - mickey is one big blob. I guess I should have stuck with doing it the same as my "test" shirts. These were all completely dry when I did them. Can that be the difference? I bought a new bleach pen and used it on 6 shirts. I am going to try it again tomorrow and see how it goes.

Although I've not done the mickey shirts, I've done a lot of tie dyeing and it's important the fabric be damp, it helps the dye disperse through the fabric. Think of using watercolors- if you paint on dry paper the lines stay pretty much in place. But if you wet the paper first, the watercolors are going to bleed and spread out.

We made our 5 shirts today...they are soaking now.I'm concerned about our Mickey heads since we had a fair amount of bleeding past the rubber band...guess we didn't get it tight enough...So if it's a big mess, then I'll just bleach pen a Mickey outline within the 'blob'.

We did the crystal method of dying (you shake the dye dry onto the shirt, then add soda ash, then more dye, more soda ash). For the Mickey we used the liquid dye.

Can't wait to see them. I'll post pics afterwards (unless they are truly hideous, then we'll have to redo them!)

I've never heard of the crystal method of dying - I can't wait to see how they turned out!

You soak the shirts with plain water while they are wrapped up in their rubber band bundle. Then you squeeze the excess water out but they are still wet. Put the shirt in a bucket and then sprinkle the dry dye on top (use 2-3 colors) then put the wet soda ash on top, just enough to make the dye wet. Then you can either add more colors and put some more soda ash on (just to make wet, not a lot at all). Then you flip over and do the other side. Once done, put in plastic bag and wait 24 hours. The instructions I saw said you can use 5-7 colors

We used turquoise, baby blue, lilac and peacock blue...plus fushia red for the Mickey head. In theory, this should look incredible! I soooo can't wait to see.

The end result is supposed to look like water (if you do blues) or granite stone (if you do browns/orange/reds) or crystals (multiple colors would work), depending on the colors you use.

I got my dyes from Dharma Trading Company, since they had over 65 colors to choose from...

As promised, here are the tie dye t-shirts using the crystal method, not rainbow, with double Mickey heads (front and back). There are 5 shirts total. The pic with just the 2 shirts -- I redid the dye since they had a bunch of white in them. They are still wet so look more vibrant. Unfortunately, when I redid the dye, it spread into the MH on the front...

As you can see, we had bleeding of the colors, but our Mickeys, for the most part, got pretty good.

I am pleased and happy with my color choice. It is not the best representation of the crystal method, but we like it alot!

So anyone going in Sept -- look for us!

Thanks -- just an FYI -- I did use 4 different colors for the blues/purple even if it only looks like 2 (baby blue, turquoise, peacock blue and lilac).

WOW, those shirts look great! I'm too scared to try the crystal method right now....but when wwe are doing it just for fun, then I will, LOL

We made shirts back in July, I think, LOL. And we are going to do some more this weekend. The kids had lots of fun doing them! I bought 2 kits this time one is primary colors (red, blue, yellow) and the other is lime green (yay DIS color) and turquoise, fuschia. I may make DH a lime green mickey head, He'll have no idea if people do the "Focker Watch" to him if you don't know what I'm talking about check this thread:

My DH will be so glad when I am through with all this. I used bleach on the 4 I did for my family and messed 2 of them up. So I did a new one for DH and DS. Then theirs turned out so good, I redid mine and dd's so they would all look the same - no bleach. Then I did 2 more for my neice and her dh because theirs turned out in a big blob. Theirs turned out great. Then I decided to try to fix the 2 blob ones I did for my neice and her dh by going back over the Mickey Head. I'm washing shirts right now.
