Ok, Northerner here....I've read about the deer at the fort, which means ticks, right? Up here its a huge problem and many campgrounds spray pesticides to keep the tick population down. So whats it like at FW?

Ticks are not associated with deer in the South. By that I mean they are everywhere. Our warmer climate allows for a larger population, but not to the point of fear. You are more prone to deer tick borne diseases like Lyme and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever than we are. It can happen here, but the stats are low compared to you guys.

Here they are primarily in wooded areas, like off-trail walking through the woods and brushing up against bushes and tall grass, which is primarily where they are found waiting for a potential host to come by and brush them off.

I do not know of any campgrounds around me here in MS that spray for them. I'm sure there are some places, but none that I have gone to. I have not heard of anyone reporting a lot of ticks at the Fort, but I am sure that one or two have been spotted. If you are concerned about it being a problem, I would suggest that it is not, and don't worry about it being a factor.

FW sprays continually. We have never had a tick on us or our dogs and have never heard of and friends or their dogs get a tick.

Same here we have never seen a tick on us or the dogs at the fort and we go camping about 4 times a year.

Awesome- thanks. Since it so ridiculously bad here, we just don't camp. I'm thinking camping THERE would be fun for my family!

Former Northerner and transplanted to Florida 8 years ago from RI. I know about ticks up north, but we have never had a problem with ticks here, and we stay at FW with our dog a lot. Been using Frontline Plus for flea and tick prevention (monthly application) for the past 11 years. No tick problems for us in the south. Enjoy the Fort.

1) Yep.
2) We really do not have a tick problem.

NOTE: However, after a few "Magical Star Cocktails" at Crockett's Tavern, a few folks have developed tics.

I work in the woods in PA, and occasionally will find a tick. I also hunt and did not have any during the season. My deer that I killed only had four on her. Yes they come crawling out. In the campgrounds I work I have never heard of anyone complaining of ticks, yes you may get one. But not sure why all the hysteria. Yes I know people that have Lyme disease also. But I am more worried about some idiot on their phone or putting on their makeup killing me with their car than getting lyme disease. Ticks in the woods are a fact of life. Camping take place in the woods. SO go camp in the woods relax enjoy and at the end of the day check each other for ticks and get on with your night. Ok, off my soapbox now. Sorry I am grumpy this morning, maybe it is the cold.

Feels like -19 here so I feel your pain and grumpiness!

We don't have a huge problem where we live in NY, but we do get our dog the Lyme vaccine (and Frontline Plus) because we camp all over the Northeast. I have personally never had a tick on me or my dog. Our friend who lives about 30 minutes away works out in her garden and gets ticks all the time.

Where we are, I know many people who have Lyme problems. They can be terrible! We won't be bringing our pets but I was just trying to figure out the situation down there....
