My son and his gf are staying at All Star Sports for 2 nights and only plan on doing AK. Is it best to buy their ticket at the gate when they get there or purchase it ahead of time?

If they want to make advance FP+ selections, they will want to purchase them in advance.

As for pricing, Disney does not typically discount 1 and 2 day tickets. 3rd party resellers like UT will actually sell 1 & 2 day tickets for more than gate pricing.

They can't book fastpasses if they don't have tickets. So, yes, it's better for them to buy them at least 60 days in advance.
