Ticket Upgrade Question

Dh & I are headed to WDW with 6-day MYW tickets during the free dining promotion in September. We are also wanting to go for a few days during Christmas. Can you upgrade your MYW ticket to an annual pass and not lose the free dining? Does it make sense to do this? I realize we couldn't get the dining plan during Christmas, but is there anything else I should think about before deciding?

Thanks for the links with all the information. That was a lot of work to put together, but very helpful to someone like me who doesn't usually go that frequently.
