I hadn't logged into MDE in a while, and I did so today and noticed that I have a 4 day park hopper that I purchased a while back for a potential solo trip. We are planning on being the parks in early December and we all have 9 day park hoppers.

Would I be able to change my ticket to a 5 day hopper and use the remaining 4 from the other ticket? Am I better off to use that ticket another time?

It would not be cost-effective to use both tickets for your trip. Have you already purchased your 9-day park hoppers? If not, you can simply upgrade the 4 day park hopper to a 9-day hopper when you arrive at WDW. This would affect FP+ planning, however, as you could only make 4 days of FP+ until that ticket is upgraded to 9-days.

If you've already purchased the 9-day, I would just stick with that and use the 4-day on another trip.

Depending on when that ticket was purchased, upgrading it may not be a good idea. If it was before the switch to the tickets with the expiration dates then you would have to pay the difference on the ticket to a current 4 day first, then upgrade. If this is a ticket that predates that change, I would just hold onto it since it won't expire.
