I bought my DS8 a 10 day non-Expire WP&M ticket. Turns out he won't be using one of the park days in January (he turns 9 the end of the month) and this will be his last visit to the park ebfore he turns 10. If he uses a DQ day, is it still considered used when he is a child and wil get the free upgrade to the adult pass when we come back and he is 10 or does he actually have to use a park day ? I'm hoping that using it at all will work.

As long as the ticket has gone through any WDW turnstile the ticket counts as having been used.

If you go to the locked sticky Everything About WDW Tickets in the TPA&S Forum, especially Post #9, you can get a lot more information. An easy way to get to the sticky is by clicking on the link in my signature.
