Ticket and MDE Question - What if one member of the party doesn't go on trip?

I just cruised the ticket FAQ pinned thread and couldn't find anything related to my question, so I'll throw it out to everyone:

We are starting to make plans to bring DS's best friend along on a trip to WDW, planning to stay on property. The past few trips we've bought tickets through Undercover Tourist and on our recent trip we linked them to our MDE account. We'd probably do it this way again, and we'd pay for the friend's ticket. So I'm thinking we'd add DS's friend into our MDE (his family is NOT a Disney family, so it's not like he's already set up under theirs to link into our reservation) and then link his ticket to him.

My question is what happens if he doesn't come for one reason or another? Are we out the cost of the ticket? In the old days before MDE and FP+ I'd say we would just have a spare ticket to hang onto for future use, but once it is linked to him in MDE will I have the option to unlink it?

You can leave it in MDE until you decide to use it for someone in your family. If his name is on the reservation, you can schedule an extra set of FPs 60 days in advance. If his name isn't on the reservation, you can schedule FPs 30 days in advance and use his ticket at the FP tapstiles to enter the rides. Don't use the ticket at the entrance tapstiles and the ticket entitlement stays in your MDE until you decide to use it.

OK, yeah, he'd be on our reservation. So it would sit tied to his name in our MDE until I assigned it to someone else?

Of course this is all hypothetical and I would hope there won't even be a need for a backup plan!

YUP. In December DS had ticket in my MDE linked to his name. He decided to go ahead and buy an AP so I decided to keep that ticket for a later trip for DH. All I had to do was go in to MDE and "reassign" the ticket. Of course once the ticket is used it can't be reassigned.
