THV vs SSR

We're excited about our first DVC stay in October. I had planned to reserve a 2 bedroom at SSR but thought I'd check to see if any THV were available since the points are increasing for 2013. Sure enough one was available, so I reserved it. But now I'm wondering if that was a good move. It will probably just be the 4 of us (2 adults, 2 kids), so it seems like a lot of space. We're not planning to do Disney parks- maybe Legoland and/or Sea World- so the space might be nice to relax. What would you choose- 2 bedroom at SSR or THV- and why?

I would say go for it before the point increase. We loved our stay there! The grounds arer beautiful and it's nice to not have to worry about your kids making too much noise. The quiet pool there is also nice. And just think of how nice it will be to separate your kids at bedtime - it makes it so much easier. The deck outside is also lovely to enjoy your morning coffee on.

If you are not doing the parks, then you are not doing the busses so this is not a consideration for where you stay at the resort. Both the THV and 2BR are over 1000 square feet so how big the room is should not be a concern. I think it comes down to how the space is laid out. If you have seen the diagram and photos of the THVs and they do not bring up any issues, then go for the THV prior to the point increase.

Things to take into consideration:

Pool. If you are planning to spend a lot of time at the pool at the resort, the THV pool is like a backyard pool. We had to trek from our treehouse over to SSR to use a decent pool. This was our number one annoyance with THV. Since we had the 2nd villa from the THV entrance, it was a long trek for us.

Ourdoor space: If you plan to hang at your villa a lot, the outdoor deck at the treehouse is very nice with a table with 4 chairs. The SSR balconies will not give you that space. Of course, our stay at our treehouse had terrible mosquitos so we couldn't use the deck but it had been our intent and the deck itself didn't disappoint. There's also a barbeque at each treehouse which is a wonderful perk.

The space of the villas aren't different; it's how the space is allocated. The THV has a gorgeous kitchen and master bath and a decent dining space. Other than that, the space is smaller. The master bedroom is smaller (queen bed vs a king) and the two bedrooms are small. The living area in the THV is pretty small and has an awkward layout.

My family of 4 has stayed at SSR in 1 bed room, 2-bedroom, and the THV over the years. For the same points as a 2 bed room, the THV was great for the four of us. My son loved the bunk beds and my DD16 was very happy to have her own room. We cooked out twice right outside out THV, and the deck was great place to relax.
We did take the bus over to the springs to go to the main pool one time, but my DS9 was happy with the THV pool as well.
I think it made for a relaxing vacation.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. I think we'll stick with the THV. We stayed in one of the original treehouses when I was a kid and I remember thinking how cool they were. The kids are super excited!

I think 2 big considerations are.
1) Queen size bed not a king.
and
2) All of them have stairs. If no one is in a stroller, no biggy, but lugging a stroller up and down stairs, (or worse if a family member has issues medically), it is a consideration.

I think the kids will LOVEEEEEE each having their own rooms, and their own TVS.

If the two above do not detour you, I would def try while you have the option for no extra points!

We just stayed 10 nights in the THV, and they are our fav's hands down!

FWIW, my children 12 and 14 actually preferred the smaller THV pool over the main pool. They only used the slide there once. They said it smelled like pee! (So they actually didn't tell me until a few days after we went there that was the reason they did not return-never had that problem in the past...yuck!) Anyway, having their own rooms was great, no fighting over who's watching what!

Queen/King doesn't matter to us and the kids are 8 and 10 so no strollers. But good to keep in mind for future visits with grandparents!

Well ick about the pool! We'll have to try out the various pools and see which we prefer. Thinking we might pool hop somewhere for a little variety, too.

we just had this same debate. We have two THV reserved for August (there are 13 of us traveling down). We decided to stay with the THV and make a request to be near the bus route (I know this does not guartantee it). My decision was made as soon as I got the point increase; I figured i would rather try it at the lower points.

have a great trip!

Best time as any to try the treehouses :thumbsup2

I guess it was 2 years ago we tried the THV and ended up just being the 4 of us.( was suppose to be more) Kids loved there own room :lovestruc

We were lucky that we had a location that the walk over to the main pool/community hall wasnt too bad. (actually a nice stroll if going for the afternoon)

Generally we use the quiet pools for an evening swim etc

The Accessible THVs do have ramps along with stairs.

The Treehouse Villas are really fun. Great theming. Kids will love it. Ask for a villa near the walking path. We were in one of the closest to the walking path and it was only a short walk to the Carriage House and even closer to the Grandstand Bus Stop.
