Thrill rides at US/IOA

I'm taking my fearless children to US/IOA this summer and while I'm excited about it, due to an inner ear imbalance I have a hard time with big roller coasters, anything that spins too much or goes upside down. At WDW I've been able to successfully ride Splash Mountain, Thunder Mountain, Dinosaur, and Tower of Terror. Several years ago we went to US and I was able to ride MIB and Earthquake w/out any issues. While I did do Back to the Future, it was with my eyes closed almost the whole ride and I definitely had some balance issues after the ride was over. I really would like to try to ride Mummy and Dr. Doom but don't want to spend the rest of the day having trouble. How do Mummy and Dr. Doom compare to Dinosaur and Tower of Terror?

The Mummy and Dinosaur are really nothing alike. The Mummy is a roller coaster. I don't want to ruin the attraction for you, but if you can handle the drop on Splash Mountain, I do not see any problems with the drop(s) on Mummy. If you had issues on Back to the Future, you may encounter some issues, however, because the The Mummy goes fast and it does have some quick turns which might be a problem for you.

Dr. Doom is similiar to TOT but where TOT goes up and down several times, Dr. Doom does not. That being said, DD gives me way more of a rush than TOT does. If you can handle a zooming up/down sensation, I would say you are probably ok on this one.

Hi Darcy! This is my comparison - hope it helps! The Mummy is an indoor roller coaster which I would compare to Space Mountain. Dinosaur (one of my favorites) is a vehicle - I would say Dinosaur is more of a Spiderman type of ride. The Mummy does go faster than Space Mountain and it does NOT go upside down. I think the Mummy is more of a coaster that goes thru really cool effects of the movie. Since it is indoors, you do not get a sense of height and there is no spinning or flipping. You go thru different rooms as the story unfolds. It is very cool and lots of fun and it is over so fast. I think the special effects are more thrilling than the actual coaster itself. Dr. Doom (to me anyway) is like an outdoor Tower of Terror.

I am a roller coaster fanatic and LOVE Mummy. At Disney, I would compare it to Everest because of a directional change (don't want to say too much and spoil it), but it is definitely more of a thrill ride than Everest or Space Mountain. I say that because you get real, actual "air time" in a couple of spots, which is my favorite part of any coaster. But the dark ride elements are amazing and add another dimension far beyond Everest (sorry, but an animatronic Yeti doesn't cut it compared to scarab beetles and a fire room). Since it doesn't spin or go upside down, I think you would be fine on Mummy. It is not to be missed...hubby and I tend to ride it repetitively.

I don't think Dr. Doom would bother you...it's mostly just a quick shot up and some mild "bouncing." It's on a par with Tower of Terror, but with no dark ride effects since it's outside and more like a "Space Shot"-type ride.

Thank everyone. I'm going to try them (at least once). Quick turns are ok, and so is the up and down, just too much spinning and upside down really does me in. I can't ride the teacups (which my kids think is really funny) but do ok with Thunder Mountain and Splash Mountain. I'm sure they'll ride everything (more than once!) and we'll all have a great time! I'll just wait for them outside the big roller coasters.

darcy, i take medicine for inner ear problems. my balance is off when i'm stricken with the vertigo.

when my balance has improved, i stop the meds.
have you ever asked your doctor about ativan?
there are other meds out there also. it's just the one that has been prescribed for me.

i always take a new refill with me when i go to the parks. it would be a bear to have the balance issue arise while at the parks.

i do all the rides and just hope for the best and carry my pills with me.
haven't had much problem except with the polka portion of jimmy neutron.

macraven: Thanks for the info, but I have to be very careful about taking any medications (including over the counter ones) as I tend to get some very wierd side effects - sometimes not even the ones they list. Its made me very cautious about taking anything other than the few antibiotics I'm not allergic to or tylenol products. I'm one of those people who have a real sensative system to any type of medicine. For me the cure could be worse than the symptom. Thanks for the thought though.

darcy, i totally understand. i can not take any aspirin products.
i take 3 daily prescription meds and the one for balance is a prescription also but only take that when needed.

you have to be careful when taking different meds. many things can upset a person's system.
