I live on Long Island, NY. My two teen daughters and I like to go to thrift stores. Once a year we go on day trips to various places in jersey, Long Island, etc. Since there is no vacation for us this year I would like to do an overnight trip to a town or area that has many thrift stores (they like to buy clothes and books). If water or ocean near by that's great too.lol

I love to drive so, I was thinking of visiting overnight montreal, I hear St. Laurence blvd or has a good selection of stores or even Maine

Any other ideas?

I'm gonna pop some tags, only got $20 in my pocket....

(I apologize, that was not helpful at all. The coffee is getting to me this morning)

Its not a thrift store but the Brimfield Market is usually in September I think. There's just about anything you can imagine there and it's a pretty fun day. Its in Massachusetts.

I agree with the PP that the Brimfield Flea Market is great fun.... but probably not so much for your teens.... the clothing is strictly vintage (and pricey) and not so many books (at least not cheap). That being said, a lot of folks who live in the area take advantage of the foot traffic and have yard sales of their own.

There are a few websites out there that list and rank thrift stores... try a Google search!...............P

I'm in Maine, we definitely have water! :)
Not knowing exactly what you're looking for, but there are many Goodwills in/around the Portland area. I'm just north of Portland and there are 11 within 45 minutes of me (in different directions) plus there is a By-the-pound GW Outlet just outside of Portland, too. The store in South Portland is huge; it's a former Circuit City. All have a good selection of clothes. All but 1 (I think?) has a great book section. (There is a bookstore right next door to the one, so they aren't allowed to sell books.)
There's also one you'd almost pass driving up just over the NH line in Portsmouth.

(Full disclaimer, my DH works for GW so we tend to shop them all. :)

There are 2 Salvation Army shops in Portland. Trying to think, a few others around as well. Honestly, they never have much for books. Clothes, like anything, hit or miss.

A few independent type thrift stores around like for Catholic Charities, etc.
