Three more hours till we eat again!!! Deluxe Dining Review 12/15-12/22

Hollywood Brown Derby

Welcome to what was our absolute worst dining experience of the whole entire trip. For years, I have wanted to try this place, and even wound up canceling my reservation at the Yachtsman Steakhouse, because I was able to snag a table here. I'm kicking myself now.

I made an earlier 5:15 reservation, with the hopes of being done by around 7, and then getting on the Fantasmic line for the 8:00 show. I checked in at 5:10, and was told that I would be seated in a few minutes. This turned into about 40 minutes. No big deal, it was still early enough, the kids weren't cranky, and I wasn't starving.

We finally get seated at a table in the back of the restaurant next to the the patio. This night happened to be the coldest of our trip, so it was around 40-50 degrees or so. The door next to us was wide open, and there were no people sitting outside. Our waitress,(Can't remember her name), came to our table, no smile, no personality and asked for our drink order. We weren't in the mood for wine or anything so we just wanted some sodas. She then asked, "You don't want a special drink?". We said, "Neh, not tonight, just the sodas". I guess she didn't like that because she walked away with a bit of an attitude.

She comes back with our sodas and some bread, and my husband politely asked her if she can close the door. It was freezing and really uncomfortable at this point. There was another table next to us, and their kids were shivering. Her response was "No, sorry, people sit out there, so we have to keep it open". So I kind of laughed and said, "It's freezing and there's nobody out there". She said, "Um, sorry I can't do it".

For appetizers we shared their famous Cobb Salad, which had a decent flavor, but was way too finely chopped for my liking. I felt like I was eating ice cold pureed lettuce. My two year old daughter loved it though. I have read all the reviews on here before about this, so I wasn't surprised. I just wanted to give it a try. We also ordered the Blue Lump Crab Spring Roll. It was just okay. It reminded me of the frozen appetizers in the box that you would buy from Restaurant Depot. It had a spicy tuna type of sauce with it which I felt didn't go. At this point we were so cold that my husband just got up and shut the door. Everyone around us started thanking him.

From this point on, we didn't see our waitress for about another 20 minutes. No drink refills, no extra bread, no nothing! When she came back, I saw her glance at the door that my husband had closed and then proceeded to mumble something under her breath. Seriously? Why does she really care anyway?

Finally, our dishes come out. I ordered the Duck Two Ways and my husband got the Sterling Silver Pork Chop. The kids shared the grilled chicken. My Duck (all five little pieces of it) were raw and ice cold. The potato that it was on top of was luke warm mush. My husbands Pork chop was ice cold as well. For a $40 dish, at least let it be hot. So we both didn't touch our plates, as we waited for our waitress to come back. About 10 minutes later, we see her catering to the larger table of drinkers behind us.

My husband called her over and told her that our food was cold. She gave us this annoyed look and said, "It's too cool for you?", took the plate away and said that a manager would come to our table. Well, this took about another 15 minutes or so. Finally, a manager comes over, says he's sorry, and asks if we wanted another meal. At this point, we were already there for almost two hours and just wanted to get on with the night. He told us that he wanted to do right by us and would only charge us 3 dining credits instead of the 6 (2 points a person). I thought that was fair, so I was fine.

After another 15 minutes, our waitress comes back and asks if we want dessert. My husband didn't want anything but coffee, so I ordered the Grapefruit cake, because I wanted to see what the hype was all about.
The coffee, no exaggeration, was ice cold, I thought that my husband was just starting to complain because he was pissed off about everything else, but this coffee had to have been sitting on the side for hours. The Grapefruit cake in my opinion had to be one of the grossest desserts ever. Parts of the cake were soggy, some parts were hard. The topping was so bitter and had this really weird but nasty taste. There was a dirty looking piece of dried up grapefruit on top as a garnish, which was nasty as well. My husband took a bite and spit it out in his napkin immediately, and he loves grapefruit.

The waitress returned with our bill and I notice that she charged us 5 credits (weird), which the manager had said was going to be 3, and then charged us extra for the coffee and dessert. Really??? I guess she was trying to up the bill for tip purposes. We had told her what the manager had said, and asked her why she was in addition, charging us for coffee and dessert if we were on the Deluxe Meal Plan. She just snatched the bill, said she had to discuss it with the manager, rolled her eyes and walked off. My husband had just had it with the place, so he got up and walked out and went to one of the stands in HS to get a HOT cup of coffee.
The waitress came back with the corrected bill and said "Sorry about your meal", and walked away. I just signed the bill, left a $10 tip (which was probably too much) and just couldn't wait to get out of there.

Overall, this was the worst meal and service of our trip. I believe that the total of the bill before comps was around $160, and we only used three credits. There is no way that this place should be a two credit per person meal, especially when compared to some of the other Signature places on property. Every restaurant is gonna have a bad night, but this was bad all around. We will not be returning.

We enjoyed 50's on our last trip and your post reminded me that I had that same wedge salad as my appetizer. For ages I could never remember what I'd had. I enjoyed my entire meal there and even snagged some of hubby's friend chicken. The atmosphere was so much fun.

HBD sounds miserable. I wouldn't have left her any tip. She certainly didn't deserve it. glad that isn't n our list.

Crystal Palace Breakfast

We had a 9:25am reservation, checked in and waited outside 10 minutes or so to be seated. We got our coffee and juice and then hit the buffet. The selection was pretty decent. There was an omelette station, which was a good thing considering the scrambled eggs didn't look too good. The Mickey waffles and pancakes were warm and fresh. There was your typical bacon and sausage, and the kids loved the Pooh Stuffed French Toast (similar to a zeppole).

I thought the character interaction was very good, a little slow, but good. It took a while for all of them to get around the restaurant though. I felt a little bad, my daughter got so excited when Pooh came out, that she ran up to get his attention and tripped him. Some of the best character pics we took were at Crystal Palace.

Overall, I enjoyed the breakfast much better than the dinner I had there years ago. Plus, we got to see all of the characters (Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore and Piglet). Definitely a nice way to start off the day in the Magic Kingdom.

The total bill was around $100, and we used three dining credits.

O'hana

This was probably the one meal that I was most concerned about, considering all of the mixed reviews it gets on the boards. This was also our only non Signature dinner of the week. I was very very pleasantly surprised!!!

We checked in for our 6:20 reservation on time and knew right away by the crowd level that there would be a wait. We sat down and had some tropical drink and waited in the lobby area. Our pager went off soon after and we were finally seated around 6:45. Not too bad!

The restaurant was darker than I had imagined, but had a real nice cozy and warm feeling. I remember the seats being really comfortable. We sat near the open kitchen area and could watch the meat being cooked on the fire. Our waitress brought over some bread and salad and then took drink orders. My first drink was real strong, so I just got a soda (wanted to make it to the MK afterward). The bread had a nice sweet taste and the salad was in a lime vinegarette dressing. Don't remember too much about it, but I remember that we finished it, so it must have been good.

This is was a family style served meal, so first came out the huge platters of dumplings and chicken wings. The dumplings had a nice taste, and the wings were awesome. Sweet, sticky, a little messy to eat, but who cares, they were great. The kids absolutely loved the dumplings.
Next came out the Lo Mein and Broccoli, which was nothing out of the ordinary, but a nice side dish for all the meats that followed.
Our waitress came by with skewers of chicken, pork, shrimp and steak. I remember the chicken and pork being tasty but a little dry. The steak and shrimp were fabulous. I know a lot of people complain about having to peel the shrimp. Totally not an issue for me at all. That's what wet wipes are for.

We were so stuffed from this meal, but out came the dessert and we couldn't resist. It was the warm bread pudding with bananas foster. Wow!!! This was unbelievable.

I know lots of people talk about how this place is so loud and annoying with all the hula, singing and coconut races, but I didn't find it loud at all. I was actually surprised about how toned down it was. The Hawaiian singer came by a bunch of tables, sang a little and that was it. I think they did one round of coconut races too. Nothing distracting or annoying at all.

Overall, this meal was fabulous. I really went in expecting to hate it, but it turned out to be one of my family's favorite meals. Definitely the kids favorite by a long shot. We definitely will be coming back.

The total bill was about $130 and we used three dining credits.

Tuskerhouse Safari Breakfast

We had a 9:30 am reservation, but unfortunately due to some complications on our bus, we got there about 10:30. I thought we were going to have a problem, but the hostess was really nice and had us taking our picture and seated within 10 minutes.

I had originally booked Tusker House as a lunch, as I had wanted to try Boma for breakfast. About a week before the trip, I realized that it was gonna be way too much food for the day, considering we had dinner planned for Jiko at the AKL, so I got lucky and switched it to breakfast.

Anyway, we sat down in a separate room, not too far from the buffet. We started out with the jungle juice which was awesome. I'm not a fan of orange juice and usually opt for a soda with my breakfast, but I had about three glasses of this stuff.

There was a nice selection on the buffet and everything looked fresh. Eggs, waffles, bacon, pancakes, you name it. I loved the different quiches and all the nice baked goods. They also had fresh chocolate frosted crispy creme donuts that the kids just loved. There were a few African inspired dishes such as Bobotie, which I wasn't that thrilled with.

Because of the timing that we were there, around 11:15 they started putting out lunch, which we could have eaten as well. I was very relieved that I canceled the lunch, because the majority of the dishes did not look that appetizing to me. It's not that I'm not adventurous, in fact I love trying new things, but I didn't care for any of it.

Out of all our character breakfasts, I felt that the character interaction here was by far the best. Mickey, Donald, Daisy, Goofy and Pluto all came around the restaurant at least two times each. They took several pictures, and were very sweet with the kids.

I would definitely return here if going to the Animal Kingdom.
Total bill was about $90 and we used three dining credits.

Jiko

We left Animal Kingdom around 5:15, took the bus over to the AKL and made it just in time for our 5:35 reservation. I was really looking forward to exploring the AKL considering we were thinking of staying there. It had a very similar feeling to the WL where we chose to stay, but in my opinion just not as festive and warm, and it seemed a little too far away from everything else.

We checked in and were seated immediately at a beautiful window seat. The restaurant was dark and had a very romantic feel and the lighting made it very peaceful. The place wasn't fully packed yet as it was still early. We had a wonderful and knowledgeable waitress whom was actually from NY. She explained the menu to us and made some pretty nice suggestions.

We received a nice warm basket of bread, along with a curried flavored butter. Me and the kids enjoyed it, but the hubby thought it was weird. I had wanted a nice glass of red wine, so the waitress suggested and introduced me to what is now my favorite and cheapest bottle of red. It's the Jam Jar Shiraz, and from what I was told by my local liquor store was that all their customers who go to Disney, come home requesting this stuff. Ten bucks a bottle, but my new fave!!!!

To start, I ordered the African spiced chicken and cheese flatbread which was pure heaven. Had a very different taste, but was great. I've been dreaming of it since I've gotten home. My husband had the tuna tataki which was pretty basic, but he said was nice and fresh. For the main meal, I had the Oak Grilled Filet, which was by far the best steak of the trip. It was so tender, I was able to cut it with a butter knife. My husband had the short ribs which were delicious too. The kids shared the kids steak, which was a nice and decent steak.

For dessert we shared the Coconut Bread Pudding, which was really yummy, and the One Last Cup, which was a chocolate mouse with cinnamon. This was just okay, nothing to write home about. The kids had a nice smores dessert, which mommy helped finish as well :)

Overall, the food and service were superb. This was another favorite dinner of the trip, and I would not hesitate making a special trip to the AKL for another meal here, especially on an Animal Kingdom park day.

Total bill was around $240,(pricey but worth it), and we used six dining credits here. I would probably say that of all the signatures we dined at, this one most warranted the 2 credit per person.

Earl of Sandwich and T-Rex at Downtown Disney

On our day off from the parks, we had originally planned on having breakfast at Kona and then heading to Downtown Disney. We got a bit of a late start and decided to skip Kona (will do next time hopefully) and go directly to Downtown.
After what seemed to be the longest bus ride ever, we finally made it to DD by around 10:00. We were a little hungry and had several hours till lunch so we stopped off at Earl of Sandwich.

I've read so many great thing about this place, I was actually excited that I was gonna get to try it. The regular lunch/dinner sandwich menu looked awesome, but I wasn't wowed by the breakfast sandwiches at all. We just ordered some egg and cheese sandwiches and my son had the turkey one. Pretty disappointing. It tasted like one of those Lean Pocket sandwiches out of the microwave. I did have a really great cup of coffee though.

T-Rex

After doing some shopping, we headed over to T-Rex for our 1:30 reservation. We walked right in and got seated immediately. The place is absolutely huge. Pretty identical to the Rainforest Cafe only with Dinosaurs instead of Elephants. Upon check in and based on reading reviews, I had requested not to be seated in the Ice Cave, however I was seated right in front of the Ice Cave facing it, so it made no difference whatsoever. It wasn't nearly as bad as some have made it. Every once in a while, the colors would change from blue to red. Also, it was noisy, but not overwhelmingly noisy. I expected my daughter to be scared and to leave the place with a headache, but it really wasn't that bad at all.

The portions at this place were insanely huge. Also, since this place is not included in the dining plan, we skipped the appetizers and just got some burgers. We had the burgers with bacon, cheese, and avocado, which were great. I had also taken the advice of some posters and printed out at home the $.99 cent kids meal coupons from Rainforest Cafe which were usable here as well. Our waitress honored the coupons, however she definitely looked annoyed and her level of service went downhill, once I gave them to her.

T-Rex was a fun place to enjoy a burger and to get out of the parks for a while. The total bill after the kids coupons was $55. I would definitely return.

Narcoosees

Well, this was our last night and dinner in Disney, and I was hoping that we were saving the best for last. Did we?

We headed on over to the Grand Floridian for our 5:50 dinner at Narcoosees. Even though the place wasn't too crowded, we wound up waiting a good half hour to be seated. Finally we were called and were taken to a nice table by the window overlooking the castle at MK. We were very happy so far.

WILDERNESSLODGEDISNEY160.jpg

Our waiter came over, took our drink order (Had the Coconut Key Lime Martini) and then disappeared for a while. The other tables around us who had been seated after, were already given their sourdough bread and had their orders taken. Not a big deal, we just wanted some bread and butter to occupy the kids while we wait.

For apps, we ordered the Mussels and the Calamari. The calamari tasted okay, however there were only about 8 tiny calamari in the dish and they were soggy. 90% of the dish was hot pepperoncinis. The mussels were completely inedible. They were slimy, fishy and cold. Half of the shells didn't even open. They were definitely no good and we didn't want to get sick so we sent these back immediately and just got a salad instead.

For the main course we both ordered the Whole Main Lobster. The waiter had told us that it was a 2 lb lobster. Yeah right! It was tiny and didn't even have a tail. Also, when it got to our table, the lobster was cold. Not warm, but cold. It was weird, it was almost like it was put in the refrigerator. So we called the waiter over again and told him. He brought them back and we didn't see anyone for another fifteen minutes. Finally, the manager brings us two new lobsters, which were hot this time. She apologized and made a nice gesture by comping my two drinks and my daughter's pasta. We began to eat again, and as I bit down into the claw, I bit down on a nasty thick rubberband. Yuck!!! Oh well. I wasn't gonna complain again. Just really disappointing.

It was now dessert time, we were not too full from dinner, so we shared the Tres Leche cake and the Almond Crusted Cheesecake. I do not even like cheesecake but this was so good, so good that it almost made me forget about how bad my meal was. It was really the best cheesecake I've ever eaten. My husband enjoyed his cake as well. Diabetic and all, he finished his plate.

Overall, the food was not up to par by no means. The apps were horrible. The main dishes were not disgusting, once hot, but were no where near the $66 a dish price tag. If I had not been on the dining plan and ordered that lobster, I would have laughed in the waiters face upon him bringing it to me.
Had my meal not ended with such a delicious dessert, I would have really been aggravated, but it is what it is.

The total bill was about $220 even after my drinks and daughter's meal was comped, and we used six dining credits. I most probably would not return to this place.

Thanks for the detailed dining reviews! Personally, I would have left the HBD waitress a drawing of a hug, since it sounds like she needed that more than the $10. We are eating there for a lunch on the DxDP, so I am interested to see if it will be out "worst meal" story of the trip! We chose Citricos over Narc, and yours in the latest in a slew of reviews that make me feel good about the switch!
