My DD12 needs to have her upper lip hair removed. It's dark and very noticeable, and the boys are starting to tease her at school. What are the pros and cons of threading vs waxing, especially at a young age?

I've heard threading is less painful and doesn't cause bumps from ingrown hairs and/or irritation. I personally don't have time to sit for 15-30 minutes to get my brows threaded so I opt for waxing. My friends rave about threading.

My young teen had her eyebrows threaded. It took about 5 minutes and wasn't painful. It was $10 for both brows.

I would find out about having it lightened and not fully removed yet. Chances are it's not going to grow any longer than it is so it should't start growing in dark again very fast. But if you remove it, then she has to deal with it coming back in and it will be dark again.

The only problem with that is how dark she is. Is her skin olive-toned? If so, bleaching looks horrid. I should know. My mom did it to me when I was younger. It looked reeeeaaalllly weird.

I don't know. Has anyone tried the NO-NO? Anyone? It was on QVC yesterday.

There is just no good answer really. We are hairy and we shave. Not what you want to hear but some people are hairy. We gave up. ;)

The issue with being that hairy is that you are going to have to have it done, over and over and over.

Waxing for the really hairy does not last long at all.. Never did the threading but for the hairy it won't last long either. On me and my oldest we are talking 1 week. Yep. So it is not worth it for us.

Essentially you want something your dd will be comfortable doing a lot.

Honestly, people here on the DIS have mentioned something sold at Costco that is a permanent hair remover. I would love to get something like that.

Good Luck. I would say try both because you are going to have to do this over and over again.:thumbsup2

Dont do it. I have mine done occasionally. The lady that normally does it had to go home, and I got another lady. This lady asked me if I had tried threading and did I want to try it. OMG. It was horrible. The eyebrows no problem, the upper lip was torture. Think of taking a rubber band and rubbing it across your arm and letting it grab the hair. That upper lip is very painful and my eyes watered the whole time. NEVER AGAIN. Waxing is much less painful.

Also on a side note, my eyebrows haven't been the same since. I have all these little stray hair looking ones that seem to want to stick up. Luckily for me, you can't see my eyebrows because they are so light. I am making an appointment with my old technician so she can make them look normal again.

I always get my eyebrows threaded. It does hurt, but then so does waxing. I find it lasts a long time.

To answer your question. DD13 started we me about last year (so same age as your DD) and we opted for the threading. She gets her eyebrows and upper lip as well. She had come with me, so knew it kind of hurt. I had her prepared, and she said it wasn't bad at all.

IMHO if she is getting teased, bleaching it will cause as much or more teasing. If the hair is thick and dark, it will be SO obvious.

Just get some Nair cream hair remover for face. Spread liberally on upper lip. Take off after 7 minutes with a damp cotton ball. Moisturize afterwards to avoid irritation (baby lotion works great).

Easy peasy.

Been there, done that. Teenagers are awful. Especially those of us who are "blessed" with dark hair. I remember doing the bleach thing and it not working. Unfortunately, my mother was not "in the know" about hair removers. My cousin used to make fun of me. Yes, cousin.

Kudos to you, as a mother, wanting to help your child. It is embarassing for a teenger.

:)

I use to get my eyebrows threaded all the time. It really doesn't hurt and its quick. The upper lip is a whole different thing. It really hurts. I just shave mine too.

Glad to know it isn't just me. She did my eyebrows and I thought, wow, that was easy. She hit that upper lip and I thought I was going to come up off the table and punch her.

I am finding out that there are lots of women that do a quick shave, it also is good for exfoliation.

Yep I prefer cream hair removers too. Hopefully one day I can get permanent hair removal.

I get my eyebrows and upper (and sometimes lower) lip done in about 7 minutes.....took longer the time I did waxing. Definitely doesn't cause bumps or irritation on me. Oh, I'm referring to threading. LOL :)

Waxing is much MORE painful in my case. My eyes water when I get threaded but it doesn't make me bleed or breakout, or make my skin puffy around the threaded area. I much much prefer threading over waxing. I don't get the weird stray hairs either....lol

Just be careful when using Nair and be sure to test the area. I cannot use Nair as it causes my sensitive skin to burn and turn red. And then it doesn't take the hair off either.....lol

I did waxing one time, won't do it again. The girl put the wax on and then ripped it off, my eyelids bled, they were red and puffy for 3-4 days after and it hurt so bad I just about cried. Never ever ever again......

OP I would go with threading, in between visits if I need a touch up I will use tweezers and pluck, I also have a trimmer that I will use to keep the eyebrow hairs shorts and trimmed and yes, I have occasionally used it to shave my lip, not all the time because the hair grows back faster but I have done it a few times when I wanted a quick fix. :)

Oh my, you bleed, breakout and get puffy skin from waxing? I get none of those things. For you I guess threading would be better.

Can't speak to the upper lip but I wax pretty much everything else.

DO NOT use Nair. When the hair grows back, it will be stubbly (like when hair grows back after shaving your legs) and much more noticeable.

I would wax at a reputable salon the first time (i.e., not one of the cheap corner Korean joints) and see how she likes it. Personally, though, if it's really noticeable, maybe save up for laser hair removal.

If you were asking about eyebrows I would definitely say threading, but not the upper lip on I kid I'm assuming has never had any threading/waxing/plucking done. (Note: I'm making this assumption because you mention that you consider her to be young... I started getting my eyebrows waxed in 3rd grade and had plenty of experience with hair removal by 12)

I would suggest a mild hair removing cream at home for what you're talking about. Then I would suggest waxing. Yes, it's going to hurt but it is over much more quickly than threading.

My DD and I absolutely love threading for the eyebrows, but my mother thought it was incredibly painful for the upper lip-- said it felt like she was having her nose hairs ripped out for 5+ minutes.

If she has sensitive skin I would say threading. I cannot wax or use hair removal creams due to the irritation they cause. I get my eyebrows threaded. And I'm another one that just shaves my upper lip with no issues. I do it daily in the shower so the hair never really has a chance to come back.

I've been getting my upper lip and eyebrows threaded since I was 11 because I too had very dark and noticeable hair, and I was teased for it as well. The first time I got my upper lip threaded I cried a little because it was painful, but I was fine the second time. It looks much cleaner and doesn't scab up the way it does when I wax, so if your DD has sensitive skin waxing is not a good idea. Threading is the way to go. :)

I had no problem with threading or waxing. I found that the threading lasted longer. I had no problem with the upper lip but I found the eyebrows harder but I have problems with anything around my eyes.
