Thread size limit

Does someone know what the official size of thread can be before it is shut down by moderators? Is it a "rule" or just random...curious because I am taking care of a pay if forward thread that is getting quite long...don't want to lose everyone's info

We lock threads at 250 pages. Super-long threads have caused performance problems on the site.
