I know you're not asking me but we have to have pork and sauerkraut on New Year's too. Even if we make other food for dinner, that has to be made too. Everyone needs to take at least one bite of it. And to go along with the strange stuff in my family, my Dad can only eat cold sauerkraut out of the can. :confused3

The Amish and Mennonites have a German background. Do you have sauerkraut? I have to eat pork and sauerkraut New Years--for good luck. We're from VA so I also have to have black eyed peas. My least favorite meal of the year!
hahaha your talking to a girl that had a "Van" in her maiden name. (Grandparents had it removed BTW)
I love sauerkraut so does DH (He's from Ohio and his mom is from PA-yep, I married a yankee:scared1: :lmao: :lovestruc:lmao: )
We eat black-eyed peas(luck) and collard greens(money) (I like mine with vinegar) on New Year's Day-usually at midnight since that is not really something you want to have first thing in the morning after a night of celebration and it's supposed to be the first thing you eat in the New Year.

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: I like it cold, but out of a can:scared1:

Jeez, you almost hit the limit with smilies on that one

Nope, we eat a bowl of the "veggies" and then we eat a bowl of the plain noodles with broth and tomato sauce to flavor. When I was young, we use to go to my great-aunt's house and that's how she made it. And it got passed down. DD12 already helps me make it and it's a nice family tradition.

Do you think that's German?
Some of my memories from my Grandmothers house cannot be duplicated anymore. She lived on a farm back in the days when you fried everything. I loved fried pork chops she would flour first. She always made fresh biscuits-even for breakfast. She would have 3 hot meals a day until they got older and my grandfather didn't farm anymore.

I eat my kale with vinegar and onions pieces. I like collards too. I don't eat spinach though.

Mom cooks the sauerkraut in the oven with the pork and puts apple pieces in it to take the 'sauer' out. She only started that when we moved to PA.

I had to delete some of the smilies! :confused3

You have no idea how strange my family is. My Dad also can only eat corn on Thanksgiving or Christmas. DB will eat onion rings but will not eat anything that has onions in it. Even if you make a pot roast with onions in it, he will not eat it. He "can taste the onions". :confused3 He also will not eat a salad like we all thnk of one. It has to be plain iceberg lettuce with oil and vinegar dressing and some garlic salt. Yep, holiday meals are fun for us. :rotfl:

Bopsmom-Nothing wrong with us Yankees. :rotfl: We usually have the pork and sauerkraut for lunch on New Year's day. By that time, the alcohol is usually out of my system.

I always make pork tenderloin with red cabbage and apples deglaze the pan with some apple cider.:goodvibes

I don't know if the soup is German. There are not too many recipes that I know of(and I am not an expert) with tomatoes but, those might have been added to the recipe with the ready availability of them later on.

If the alcohol is out of your systems by NYDay lunch ya'll aren't doin' it right!:rotfl2:

I don't know if it's German. I know on my mom's side, we are Welsh and Hungarian with some Gypsy blood thrown in (but I think that's just to make us sound cooler than we are :rotfl: ) We are also big on halupkies and chicken paprikash.

I don't think I've ever had kale. But I do eat spinach.

Go figure...won't eat onions but puts garlic salt on salads?

I need to go and brush my teeth to get this 'sauer' taste out. :lmao: I'm not hungry after all this food discussion. I hope the other TKers share their sauerkraut ideas. It's been entertaining...

Night....

Good morning TKers. Just bumping us up while I eat my Cracklin O's.

Hi Killers, yes it's me the one who has been MIA for waaaayyyyy to long. I have been reading I am now on page 95:banana:, I know I should just have jumped back in but I felt lost (go figure) and have had fun reading everything.
Well back to page 96 I will get there.:goodvibes

Morning friends~ Nice to see you Disney54us! How goes you? Very ambitious to read through all those pages, I applaud you. But I do suppose that some things will make more sense if you read everything.

M&N you scared me saying that BB was on last night!

Uh, all this talk of food I've never eaten. I've never had black eyed peas, collard greens, chicken and dumplings, I've seen sauerkraut but never tasted. I have had pork (:rotfl: ) and mimosas though! And I have yet to meet a fried product I don't like. I like spinach.

In the Philippines, for New Years, we have to eat 13 different round foods to symbolize money for the 12 months of the year plus one. That usually entails fruit, doughnuts, meatballs, anything that's round goes! It certainly makes for an interesting meal. We also throw coins into the corners of the house at midnight, and you're not allowed to pick them up (of course we always forget) in order to attract money and good health during the year. We also wear something red (Chinese) for good luck.

I totally agree about the age thing. Everyone is getting older at the same rate. That's not to say though, that I haven't enjoyed being "stuck" at 26 for a long time now! I'm saddened by the idea that claiming to be 26 will no longer be cute and charming, but appear to be rather pathetic and desperate.

I'm hoping to be pregnant and 40!

Flirted a little with the bakery guy last night. Wanted to get a slice of cake for my Dad's actual birthday yesterday. He gave me the whole cake instead. Its sitting in the fridgerator. I'm trying to ignore its chocolate buttercream marble goodness. and it has icing flowers on it---I'm a sucker for icing flowers, especially pink ones.

page 101 I'm getting there!!!! Enjoying the mystery song smilies, of course that was back on the 2nd of July so you guys may have forgotten now that its almost August:goodvibes. I will get there, missed you guys so much!!!!!!!!!

Morning!!!! Looking to be a beautiful day here.

disney54us-well, nice to see you. How are you doing? I can't believe you're going to read all that you missed.

MagiKitty-That New Year's tradition sounds interesting. All those different foods...mmm. But the change would never last more than a day in my house. My kids would end up hunting it down and adding it to their Disney funds. :rotfl:

First...

Happy Birthday to your Dad Magikitty!!!

Just wanted to say hello. All that talk about food was making me hungry!!!

M&N I saw you over on the welcome board. Way to carry out your TK duties! url=http://www.mysmiley.net][/URL]
