Thoughts on booking GTY & sailing in October?

This will be my 9th cruise and we are looking at booking possibly October (maybe September). I've never cruised either of those months and wondering what the weather is like. I hear September is high hurricane season, but by mid Oct it often dies down.
If you've cruised in Oct, please let me know your experience.

Also, wondering if I should play it safe and book a selected room or go for GTY. My only hesitation is if weather is not great (rocky seas), we will have a 1 year old with us and midship would be more ideal. Of course an upgrade would be nice tho!

If you know you want to "avoid motion" (babies are kinda used to moving around in fluid so...) better to book what you want.

There is no guarantee of getting upgraded with a GTY - it is far more common to get what you book contrary to what it seems on here. And DCL is not really into the game some lines allow of "Oh I will book a GTY and then call and whine to get a change when I don't like my assignment."

October is definitely still hurricane season. Hurricane Sandy was in October, as was Hurricane Matthew last fall that caused the Dream to cancel an entire sailing. I have cruised the last 5 years in a row anywhere from late September thru early November and for the most part we had beautiful weather each time, except for the last 2 days of one sailing (first week of Oct) where we had to change course to sail around a tropical storm in the gulf. Last fall we were on the Dream the weekend after Matthew hit and Seas were rough (but not crazy) and it was rainy. If we had booked the weekend before (which we considered) then we would have been on the cancelled sailing. There is definitely a chance that your sailing will be affected by tropical weather, so I wouldn't book it unless you are ok with your itinerary being changed at the last minute.

We have only sailed twice and both were in October. Weather was sunny and hot, seas were like glass. I was quite concerned about booking during hurricane season. Last year, I had begged my DH to book the sailing in October from NY to DW and beyond, but he wouldn't agree to take our oldest DD out of her high school classes. Good thing we didn't because that sailing was rerouted to Canada due to Hurricane Matthew and that was not the itinerary we wanted. So, yes, saiing in October can be picture perfect or it can be the opposite. Good luck!
