Greetings!

Got back Saturday 12/11, but reality (boo), starting my own company (yea) and an overdose of Disney walking (ouch) necessitated a brief break from the DIS boards. But (as they say), I'm feeling much better now; and since I've read and enjoyed many a TR myself, I'll repay the favor now. Note that this isn't really a trip report of the 3:48 PM - used restroom at MK; urinal cake 10% worn away variety, just some thoughts on the whole kit and kaboodle. Oh, yes. Participating were Dr. & Mrs. Tomorrow and two dear friends (one an occaisional DIS participant) that we'd met IRL for the first time last year during dual FTP vacations.

Showtime.

We arrived at SSR at around 4:30 Sunday 12/5. Very quiet - only one other person at the front desk. We dealt with Victor, who seemed eager to please. All was going well until he actually brought up the screen of available rooms; he had that look on his face that I've seen (and made myself) when the computer displays an 'unhappy' message. He called to another CM (never a good sign at this stage) and told him that, while I'd requested a NS room, all they had in NS was room XYXY, and that was ..... Yes, he actually tailed off, as if that's where a murder had taken place. I promptly said that NS wasn't a big deal (let someone else take the crime scene ;)) and we got our 2BR in the first building that opened in May; apartment ::hee:: 2810, fourth floor, all the way to the left as you face the entrance from the parking lot. We had a great DTD view as well as a little of the leisure pool area. One more oddity - they had my address wrong in the system (wrong zip code = wrong city). I know that MS has it right - we'd just got the latest VM in the mail - so I guess that the computer systems don't get along.

This was our first stay in a 2BR - we had a Studio during MH - and we were quite impressed! We let the other couple have the MB, ain't we sweeties? (we'll be in a 1BR in May '05). The whole place was in great shape - not one defect (lights, drawers, dishes left in DW, etc). As we had a dedicated, the studio side had more closet space than our apartment; more, I think, than the MB side. We also had only one balcony, but it was much bigger than the other balconies I could see - it seemed to extend further from the building. The kitchen was quite sharp, not that we used it for more that coffee and snackies.

::Spoodles. We all ate there on arrival night; I was unimpressed, as I am with most Disney "dining experiences" (exception: 'Ohana). The food was OK, but the atmosphere was not the "loud & fun" I'd seen in reviews.

::Jellyrolls was fun that night, but it's important not to get there too early. The place needs time to fill up a bit - and for alcohol to be consumed - or else you'll be the only one standing up and doing the hand gestures to "The Unicorn".

::Crowds. We went to the MK at 4PM on Monday (open until 8 or 9) and I would have sworn that it was an EE day! Standby times for FL rides were all in the 30-60 minute range; and for the first time EVER, we had a wait for the PotC! Still, knowing that we'd be back at WDW in May, we took it easy and enjoyed the park at night. Saw Spectro from up front - that music still gets to me - then we beat the crowds to the busses. Note: crowds were heavier than anticipated throughout our stay - busier than I remembered during our October '03 trip.

::Boarding passes. I addressed this in another thread, but after a few rounds with less.than.up.to.date CMs - and one CM who actually called "The Operations Team" to find out the facts - I learned that every front desk of every WDW resort, DVC or not, can print out airline boarding passes for you.

::Holiday Decorations. Meh. I'm no Scrooge (nor Scrooge McDuck) but the decorations just didn't live up to the hype here on the DIS. Nice, but nothing that a major shopping mall doesn't have. We were impressed with the Osborne lights - we got to see Ozzy changing a few bulbs ::grin::. But whatever that snow was kept getting on - and smudging - my glasses.

::Weather. Luck-y us. We had 70's & 80's all week except Friday, when the four of us went to Sea World, when if rained. Of course, we're all wacky enough to walk though the park in the pouring rain, so it didn't dampen ::rimshot:: our spirits.

::SSR - Gateway To DTD! At the MK SSR bus stop, we experienced something that happened to us 4 times during our trip; people using SSR busses to get to DTD. There was only one young couple at the stop, and they asked us how far of a walk it was from SSR to DTD. It seems that they'd asked another bus driver how to get from MK to DTD, and they were told to take the SSR bus. This happened 3 more times - once from MGM, once from AK, and once was a horde of Pop Warner footballers trying to get to the Sports Complex via DTD; I know, because each time, as we either got on, or off, the bus, people asked us how to get to DTD, and said that they were told by a CM that SSR was the easiest connection point. Don't get me wrong - the busses NEVER had more than 9 or 10 people on them, but when SSR grows, this could cause problems at park bus stops. And while I don't want to put on the Hat of DVC Superiority, it does disturb me that the SSR bus service that (I assume) DVC pays for is being officially recommended as the way to get from park to DTD and back.

::SSR location. We loved it! The walk to DTD was short and quite pleasant, although this won't be the case for the Paddock buildings. We had a car, and went off-site for groceries, meals, etc. quite a bit - the ease and quickness of getting off Disney property or to the parks was wonderful. When we stayed at the Polynesian, it seemed like a 10-15 minute drive just to get off property. Note: the second exit to SSR is open - can leave, but can't get in - which let us avoid driving all the way back to the guardhouse.

::SSR in general. We still love it. The exterior corridors are so much better than the "endless hallways" of the hotel-style resorts; you get fresh air & sunshine (not dim lighting and mystery.smells) as you walk to/from your room. We walked around a little, and the main area still has the feel of a small town / college campus - I think that the maturing of the landscaping will go a long way to enhance that feeling. No shortage of "Welcome Home's" at SSR - guards, CMs, even some of those speedy folks in the golf carts. The construction didn't bother us one iota; yes, you might hear a saw once in a while and see scaffolding, but we're not "Princess and the Pea" types. And we think that the place will be a delightful "destination resort" (sorry to disagree, Dean) when it is all done; when the days of frenzied park-hopping fade away a bit, SSR will be a grand place just to relax, walk around a bit and serve as a prime located base for Central Florida activities.

::SSR crowds. We've been there twice, and we rarely see a lot of people anywhere on SSR grounds. Never did the Congress Park bus stop have more than 4 or 5 people; most times it was the two/four of us. Even on a hot day, the pool was almost empty; so far, the SSR common area facilities seem much more than what is needed. We'll see as the number of buildings grows, but I remain skeptical about the doom.and.gloom predictions of massive overcrowding.

Well, that's enough outta me; if you have any questions or comments, I'll do my best to answer or ignore as appropriate ::wink::. Still glad that SSR is our home resort; I guess that size really does make a difference! :duck:

learned that every front desk of every WDW resort, DVC or not, can print out airline boarding passes for you.
I was not aware of this ? This is very good to know...thanks.

it does disturb me that the SSR bus service that (I assume) DVC pays for is being officially recommended as the way to get from park to DTD and back.
I can understand this. I remember reading here going back a year or maybe more, about people using the OKW ferry to get to DD also. I wasn't sure how they were able to do this unless they told the guard they were coming in to dine at Olivia's ? Or did they outright get the guard's blessing to use the ferry to DD ? It's on par, also, with complaints about people driving and using the parking lot at BWV to access Epcot. I agree the CM's should not be encouraging these things outright.

Not sure if this was your first visit to SS, but it sounds like you had a good trip despite the increased crowds I've been reading about in recent TR's. Thanks for posting

Very informative observations. Thanks for the TR!

Thanks for the report. We are looking forward to our stay in Jan at SSR

Thanks for the very detailed report, Dr. T! The bus situation is troubling.

My counter is not moving fast enough. We'll be down in May (at OKW) as well...but it looks like we'll miss you by a few weeks.

We were impressed with the Osborne lights - we got to see Ozzy changing a few bulbs

My 16 year old son actually thought it was THAT Osbourne (not Osborne)family, so it wouldn't have surprised him.

Nice report DT. Thanks for all of the info. But please let us know more about the urinal cakes when you get a chance.;)

I understand what you're saying, but resort buses are not exclusive those staying at a particular resort, DVC included. Virtually all Disney passes allow guests to travel via Disney transportation to any part of WDW. Disney wants to make easy for Guests to leave as much of their $$ as possible in "World".

BTW, Dr. Tomorrow - glad to here that you enjoyed SSR so much! :cool1:

complaint to DVC about non-SSR using your bus system.

the bus drivers use to send these people to OKW - enough complaints and they were send to PO or CBR - both still close to DD but WDW resorts not DVC resorts.

sometime bus drivers are unaware that DVC members are paying for the transportation system that DVC uses - it is not for DD.

OKay where do you live that the Christmas decorations in your malls are that great?????

Did you see the giant Christmas trees at EPcot, and MK - do you walk down the walkway between WS and FW????

did you see the decorations at AKL or VWL or WL????

I am sorry but these are bit better than the local malls around here.

however I agreed with you SSR being close to DD and PI is a destination. too many young people that I know like to finish a day at WDW with PI.

There are no decorations at my local malls that are as great as the WDW ones! OK, so personal preference, but just had to say it.

Glad you liked your stay at the resort. Did you find out what was wrong with the other room?

And re: the bus situation - they are still entitled to use the buses. The buses are not exclusive to SSR. But then, we could go onto a talk about parking at BW or or BC to go to Epcot or at the MK resorts to go there. Same stuff. Doesn't make it right, but not something to complain about to MS in my opinion as it's not restricted, therefore it is allowed! Look at the Disney transportation map and they say - to get to DTD from MK - take any bus to any resort and then the bus from there (or walk such as it is) to DTD.

Yes - but many of the bus drivers (not the guest) were telling people to take the OKW bus - DVC members are paying for this transportation - in this situation the bus drivers should be recommending a WDW resort. there is a difference.

now for BWV, BCV or VWL - there is not a problem - they use the same bus system as the WDW resorts.

OKW and SSR do not share with a WDW resorts.

Please tell us more about this [front desks printing boarding passes].
Glad to.

First, since we've moved to Arizona, we fly Southwest most of the time; as I'm 6'4", I really prefer an aisle seat - and I prefer to sit with DW, too ::wink:: - so we try to get into the "A" boarding group. A few weeks before the trip, I'd asked here on the DIS about boarding passes and I got three main comments: front desk should be able to do it; front desk won't do it, go to a WDW resort Business Center; there's a Kinko's nearby.

So we're in our room at SSR the evening before we check out, and DW calls the front desk to inquire about boarding passes. The CM says "Nope, can't do it here; you can do it at the YBC Business Center." I then called up the YBC BC and a helpful CM (Terry) said that, while they'd be glad to do it, she believed that all front desks (not just DVC) now had access and approval to print out boarding passes. DW (yeah, it's like a tag-team match) called up the SSR front desk again, and a different CM, Autumn, also said "We can't do it here". However, when DW told her what Terry said, Autumn - in a stunning stroke of both helpfulness and practicality - asked her to hold while she contacted "The Operations Team". A few minutes later, Autumn told DW that "There had been a policy change", and that all front desks can do it. She said that we could either drop off the info that night (SWA won't do passes until midnight of travel day) or bring them in the next morning; she also said that they'd have to use a "computer in the back room" to do it.

Not really trusting this enough to drop off the info early, I went over to the front desk early on departure day morning and CM Cassandra helped me out. She knew that it was OK to print out the passes, so I gave her the conf. printouts and she disappeared in the the back. A few minutes later another CM asked if I was being taken care of; when I explained the situation, he said he'd check in on Cassandra, as the airline websites aren't that obvious re: passes. Sure enough, she was having trouble finding the right page (in her defense, it isn't obvious, like a "Print Boarding Passes" on the home page). But in less than 10 minutes, she came out with four "A" passes (9-12, for any SWA'ers).

Hope this helps.

I can also confirm that at the Grand Californian at Disneyland, they were indeed able to print my Southwest boarding pass. They did it from the same PC used to check in, and it printed on a printer behind the desk. The one thing tthey asked is that they had my permission for my personal information (res. number), since they had to type it in (which I can understand - I wouldn't want just anyone on my terminal!)

Dang, and here I was, hoping to get a status report on the urinal cake situation in the various WDW park restrooms. Thx tho for the otherwise compete trip report.

As for the bus service, we SSR owners are paying for a portion that bus service whether it's empty or full. Not that I'm saying I wouldn't mind it if DTD merchants wanted to subsidize our bus service.

Just to clarify my feelings on the matter. I realize that, if someone has the rights to use the WDW Transportation system, they have the right to use any and all of it. I'm NOT advocating the need to show your SSR key (or DVC card) to ride the SSR / OKW busses. My concern is simply that - due to the elimination of DTD -> Parks -> DTD routes - a transportation need (Parks to DTD) exists, and instead of putting a real solution in place, such as busses that run one-way, from theme parks to DTD, Disney is piggy-backing on the DVC resort(s) that are close to DTD. The boats from OKW/SSR are already busy, and I guess that I'd rather not see a constant caravan of people getting off at the Congress Park stop on the way to DTD.

IMHO - YMMV

Okay, I admit I am a bit confused. By "studio side" do you mean the second bedroom? I thought "dedicated" 2BRs had an actual second bedroom, versus "lock-off" 2BRs, which have, in effect, a studio as the "second bedroom."

As for the holiday decorations. This year Disney went very cheap and cut way back on the decorations in the parks. You can go to any land other than Mainstreet and the hub and it is hard to find many decorations. In the past every light post had something on them. A wreath or something. This year nothing. We stayed at SSR Dec 5 - 10 in a 1BR and loved it. The crowds are much higher this year. They are at levels before 9-11 for Dec. A CM told my DW that alot of folks who lost thier vacations because of the storms are there this year. I also think after more buildings open the main pool could get very crowded very easily. Artist Palate has very limited selection and I don't care for very fancy foods, found it very disappointing. There were times I did not want to go to DTD for something and could not find something I liked there. We found all the CMs very friendly and helpful during our trip too.

Sorry. Yes, I meant the second bedroom, which did NOT have the regular Studio mini-kitchen.

Dr T...glad you had a great trip!! We looked for you at the Merry Member Mixer...but, we got there late, so I guess we missed you (I was REALLY looking for a tall, redhead...I even asked a CM if they had seen you!!).

Good luck with your business!!!

Dr T. Thank you for the very informative TR. I'd have to agree that the bus transportation issue is an important one. The bus leaving EPCOT after the fireworks that goes to OKW has always been standing room only. To compound that with folks just looking for transportation to DTD is obscene. I'd imagine that SSR would be the same situation in a few years.
I know that when we leave the parks, we look forward to being able to sit down on the bus for the ride home. However, that doesn't happen often for me (as I'm a bit old-fashioned and what some would call a "gentleman") if you know what I mean.
I'm not surprised to hear that all CMs aren't on the same page (as far as printing boarding passes and other things). Disney seems to do a lot of things on the fly. Usually, that's a very good thing as they're putting the customer or member first. Unfortunately, that also results on other CMs getting blind-sided with the typical, "Well, they did it for so and so, why can't they do the same for me?" attitude.
Thumbs up for good trip reports!!!!!!
