Thoughts on 1 vs. 2 DVC Memberships

Do you think it is better to have 1 - 200 point membership or having 2 - 100 point memberships at 2 different resorts and why.

We had a 50 point add on at VWL, and just added on another 50 VWL points, and I'm still not satisfied that we have enough VWL points to guarantee a good enough vacation there at the 11 month mark. I do like to invite family members and friends with us, and even though December has lower points amounts, I've borrowed heavily for this years December vacation. I'm looking for another 50 points there.

So, I'm for the 200 1-resort membership. If you want to do it via resale and get 2 100 point contracts, I would get the same resort. Some people say that smaller contracts are easier to sell, some people want to leave a contract to each of 2 children, so there are reasons to have 2 100 point contracts.

Anyway, enjoy your dreams and the decision making process.

Advantage to 2 contracts- you can sell one and keep one if you need money for an emergency or something. You can make 11 month reservations at 2 resorts at the same time.

The problem is if you want to make a continous reservation at one resort using all the points. You then have to wait for the 7 month window to use all your points at 1 resort. If you have points at 2 resorts, and different months for renewal, that's a whole other set of problems.

Assuming two different resorts I'd say first choice two 100's and second choice 150 + 50. But in part it depends on your situation, unit size needs, whether you will have a car and what your preferences are. The 150/50 scenario will be easier to accomplish than 100/100. The per price costs should be similar depending on home resorts for the points.

Actually, IMO, it's better to have the 2 - 100 pt. contracts either way. That way if you ever want or need to sell one of the contracts you can. Getting just the one larger contract won't allow for it if you ever wanted or needed to sell as you cannot sell off only part of a contract. So for that reason alone it's a good idea to have the 2 contracts. Not that I foresee selling mind you, but at least if the need or the want ever arose, the possibility would be there.

As for owning them at 2 different resorts, we own our 2 contracts all at the same resort but it really depends on if you'll want or need that 11month advantage in 2 different resorts so it's a personnal choice;)

Best of luck!

I have 2 DVC memberships-a little over 200 pts on each, but my reason is probably different than most. I have 2 kids and put them as 'right to survivorship' so when I'm gone, there is no probate or anything else and they can do what they want with the membership. If you do get 2 memberships, just make sure the UY is close to the same month.

Well, I have heard that it is better to have smaller size contracts...point amounts that the average person could feasibly afford...rather than one huge 400 or 500 point contract.

In the case of 1 200 point vs. 2 100 point contracts, I don't think that makes a huge difference.

DH & I have 2 contracts, both with OKW as home resort. One is 200 points and one is 230 points. That seems to have worked well for us. Decent siezes as far as # of points, but if we ever had to sell for some reason :earseek: :sad1: :faint:  :( they'd probably be fairly easy to get rid of, because they wouldn't be exorbitant in price as compared to a higher point contract.

Please remember and consider that two contracts (if they are resales) will have two different sets of closing costs at @ $450 each. This of course adds onto the cost and must be considered.

I have 250 points in one contract. I wish I would have done 150 + 100 in case I need to sell part as I get older.

Somewhat related...

If you add on at another resort, can you sell one "part?" Or are they then tied together as one contract?

You can sell them separately. You could even add on in 2 parts and sell each part separately.

Hi this is Randy not Sue. We have 3 contracts with a total of 750 pts. We bought them starting in 93. We have used all the pts each year. Having multi contracts give you many options...
abilty to sell off if you can not affort.
sell off and buy different resorts
need quick cash, property is still hot to make money
We bought at good prices and love what we have done. We travel 2-3 times a year. Planning out vacations in advance if your have multi pts at different times of year.. With the 11 month window on your home area.
