We just got back yesterday, travelling on SWA. It was, on both legs, the smoothest airport experience I have had in at least 5 years.
The skycaps were falling over themselves to be helpful. The lines moved nicely, the gate agents were much less stressed, perhaps because they had not had to deal with the usual number of travellers. Security lines were much shorter than they used to be, and the interchange was much more professional than it used to be; I think that the companies have decided to get rid of their marginal employees, and of course, banning non-passengers helped immensely. In both our home terminal and at MCO there were plenty of seats for all passengers in the gate areas, and the lines at the food kiosks were manageably short. Best of all, both of our flights departed on time and arrived AHEAD of schedule.
Now that the airports are back to handling no more than the capacity they were designed for, everything seems to be much nicer about the experience of flying. I am really sorry that people have lost their jobs for the lack of air profits, but I think that once passengers get a taste of how much better things work now, the airlines are going to have a tough time getting them to accept going back to the level of service that existed before.
